Did a little exploring today. Thought about doing the shelter challenge while here, but decided to try a new and unfamiliar area. Felt it would be almost like cheating with so many resources. The last "picture" is a video I did of some of the walk.

thanks for the pics. i was a bit disappointed that i did not see any bacon jerky.

great pics and video. that area is beautiful! you can keep the gators though. glad they don't live in TN. :ohmy:

Haha, I completely agree.

Gorgeous. You have such a good eye Crash. I do miss big trees. We only have small Charlie Brown trees up here.

Really? I thought Alaska has tons of huge evergreens.

Not up here in the Interior. Those trees are 500 miles south of me. Up here it is too cold and we have too much permafrost for big trees.

In that oak hammock at the beginning all of the palms available for shelter making were Sabal Palms, Florida's state tree. As I am sure you know it is also called cabbage palm or swamp cabbage. When it is between 9' and 12' tall it is harvested for the heart of palm. It was and is used by Seminoles to make their shelters, tikis.

Saw Palmetto grows in dense thickets. Never gets very tall and has a sprawling trunk system. You can harvest the terminal buds without killing the plant. While harvesting the cabbage palm requires killing the trees. In fact it is nearly impossible to kill saw palmetto. I have had friends buy land covered in saw palmetto with the plan to clear it. Good luck with that. Burn it, it comes back denser, chop it up and it comes back. Plow it under with a bobcat and it comes back.

The berries of both plants were an important food stable for early Floridians. They also have medicinal properties. Great source of fire building materials from tinder and kindling. Several types of cordage can be made from these plants from the dander fibers, the frond hairs, the fronds themselves. I use Sabal Palm fronds for matting in front of my tent during the rainy season, for a spatula and also as tongs. Anyway, great tree.

The unseen raptor in the video is a red shouldered hawk. That is its territorial call.

My father was raised in TN, he used to tell me stories about gators ....just saying
