i am 21 years old... Every piece of me just wants to leave "modern society" behind. i want to go live in the wilderness permanently ready or not.
I dont want any part of this.
madness. Tomorrow i am going to a meeting for a job but i dont want to... job and money is meaningless to me. Sure you will have to work to survive out in the
wilderness. i will take the wilderness over "modern society" anyday. i dont have any wilderness survival skills and i know that it greatly reduces my chance to
survive out there. If there was any people that seriously wants to do the same as me in norway, i would welcome them in open arms. i long for this more

What's wrong in Scandinavia? Everyone wants to wander off. Start walkin'. Throw some food in a bag and take off. Walk until you get tired of walking then decide if you want to keep walking or go home. Pretty simple really. Why do you need someone to go with you? There's probably a bunch out there walking already. You'll probably find them.

This is your fourth post, all with the same theme. You've gone from thinking about it to definitely doing it. What's stopping you or holding you back? Why not just go?

After spending 20 years with mom and dad and enjoying all the luxuries of modern society; X-box, iPod, laptop, WiFi, and whatever else this old geezer missed it's a frightening prospect to have to take responsibly for yourself and meet the world head on. I'd run too. Just as soon as this wing heals I'm hittin' the road.

There is a break that is needed. It is a good thing to find yourself apart from all you have known, all that society claims has value, and find out what you are. It isn't wrong to question modern society or any society for that matter. Just don't throw out the baby with the bathwater. There is good in this world, but you know that. You are, in part, running from yourself.There is plenty to find wrong with society, but you are in no place to judge until you know what is wrong with you. Is the wilderness the best place to discover that? Maybe. However you admit that you don't have any wilderness survival skills. I can think of three scenarios of what will happen should you embark on this journey.

1.You will die.

2.You will get really lonely, sick, hurt and retreat home. At best this will give you a sense of humility, and you will see that you are part of the problem and will take steps to better yourself. At worst you will hate yourself and finding yourself a fool will hate life and despair of it.

3.You will succeed and grow farther detatched from all the ones who have loved and cared for you. Everyone who invested painfull hours raising and nourishing you with hope will be hurt at the loss of you. Unless of course, you have no one. I doubt this is the case.

I have to confess the first two are more likely.

In short, there are other ways to go about finding what is and why it is without risking your life to do so. But I understand that some of us have to learn the hard way. If you do this, My only suggestion is to take faith in God with you. Because in any of these scenarios, you will need it.

Seek proper mental health supervision immidiately. There are some wonderful meds available to those just graduating and realizing their dregrees only qualify them for flipping burgers or working the minimart, or whatever the Norwegian equil is. :smartass:

They used to immigrate to America and freeze to death on farms in the Dakotas. Occasionally it worked out for a few and their smarter children moved south for warmth and sunshine. My late wife was third generation Norwegian immigrant. Her grandmother lived to 102 and said prayers in her native tongue each night before bed.

So, you could possibly have another 80 years of whining like a true looser ahead of you. Best to get on the good meds asap!

I can not for the life of me fathom why suddenly everyone wants to run off and clutter up the forest with their worm eaten bones.

We should add a new section on the forum and name it Suicide by Wilderness.

Has anyone else noticed that we get these "Peter Pan" posts in cycles that coincide with major holidays and espically graduations. Universities turn them lose end of spring, end of summer and mid-winter and all of them wind up here after job hunting for a week.

Don't take this the wrong way but you seem reckless going into the wild "ready or not". There is no doubt this attitude will get you killed period or running back home. Going to live in the wild uneducated in wild edible plants or berries. Eating the wrong plant or berry can cause a unpleasent and very painful death from alkaloids in the plant.

Your gona need to work on the mental game as well from your post. You don't need money???????????????? Sorry but where is your gear and needed items coming from, barting or trading of money for goods has been going along for a long time.

The best advice I have for you is the wilderness is unforgiving so give yourself a few years to study bushcraft, smoking and preservation of meat, take a medical classes just the tip of the iceberg good luck pal.

I hope you really read Mtnmarks post he has really laid things out well.

I have no idea what the wilderness is like over there where you live, but what you're wanting is NOT the answer. Furthermore, you're not going to like the answers you will get here or are already getting...you probably already noticed that as well. You say you HATE society, yet here you are in the middle of an "e-type-society." You say you can't stand people yet you already want others to "go with you." You say that you don't have any wilderness skills yet somehow you seem to think that the wilderness is the answer, why? What you're saying makes no sense to me. I, too, dislike a lot of what I see around me, yet I am in control of my life, not those people. I just enjoyed 4 days of fishing out in the woods and lakes, yet now I'm back home with my family. Both my wife and son are like me, we're sort of semi-hermits, if there is such a thing. However we also have other family members that we need to interact with. There is an old saying: "No man is an island unto himself." Communities have kept people surviving and thriving over the centuries, and it will always be so. Look into yourself to see what you want and need. If you hate society then you are "anti-social" and that is a problem that the wilderness will never solve for you as the problem is inside you, not with society. We should do that with all of them from now on. We could put together a kit of Mora, firestreel, space blanket, water bottle and tin billy and sell it to them, then see how long they last.

We should make a few bucks off these guys at the very least. Pick a day, or a number of hours and if they die or give up and come home on your number you win the pot. I will even supply a free calender for them to take with them. It would be guaged in hours for the first day and after that by days. They should mark off each day and with their final gasp write the hour of their demise so we can accurately gauge a winner.

By the way, has anyone heard from Payne? He has not posted in three months and I fear he has finally hitched a ride with an axe murderer or child molester or possibly been sold into slavery somewhere in British Colombia. That or one of those heat seeking Canadian girls got hold of him and he is still in shock and his typing fingers will no longer move.

Have you noticed that none of these guys wanting to escape to the wilderness ever talks about leaving a girlfirend behind, or taking one with them? Do you suppose there is a connection there somewhere? Possibly a link between socialization skills, acceptance of reality and success in life?

It's not "cool" to put down those with wilderness experience & knowledge when, by your own admission, you have none. Bad form. Kyrat speaks bluntly and "to the point," such as myself. I realize that decreases our popularity, however we do have the knowledge and experience that you lack. Enough to know that what you're contemplating is both unreasonable & dangerous. However that's obviously what you don't want to hear as it "bursts your bubble." :burst: If you think that those you thanked were seriously backing you up, well then, I pity YOU! I refuse to "tiptoe on eggshells when complying with a request for information. I'm not here to stroke your ego, but to warn you. There are a couple of other sayings that I like, they are:

When I was 18 I left home and went to college for a semester. Then I went to Poland for 2 years, learned a new language and everything. Saw the world in a different light. Came back home, went to college and joined the Army. Went to Iraq and saw another perspective, and then finally graduated college, 10 years after starting.

My advice, I am sure the Norwegian Army is hiring. Isn't there a mandatory enlistment?

@Mazuki - Something else that I want you to think about.....It is my belief that most people that are fed up with their current situation and want to run off to the wilderness are, in fact trying to run away from themselves. They find that once the arrive at their Eden they are stuck with the same problem that caused them to flee since the problem was inside them, not what others around them were doing.

Actually this is kinda a great idea.......At least we all could breath a little easier sending some poor soul out into the world with nothing but what he/she came into the world with.

Personally it's real difficult to try to give a serious answer, or advice..... with no point of reference, as I sure it is for most people that have had any experience in the wild....or at least out side you house.

Stove is hot, someone is gonna stick his/her hand in the flame......Do you say, "Don't do it?"....or Do you say '"Put the gloves on first?....Or do you say, "Hey, go for it you will find out!".....Or is this running away to the wilderness, just a statement of "Hey lookie at me, I fixin' on doin' this thing.....please talk me out of it".

To all those headed out........If you really were serious, you would read, study, try, practice your skills, collect the where with all to accomplish your goal....the as some have suggested, "Just do it"!

PS, Be sure to include something to take the itch out of insect bites.....just spent a better part of the last two weeks mowing, cutting and clearing brush,...some thing ate me up, and I'm still suffering from it.

Mazuki, why does it have to be such a drastic, step for you--madness of society or complete abandonment?
Why not join the Peace Corp or any other organization that gets you out of the rat race and into helping people in less developed parts where you'd also learn some skills that would be useful in the wilderness?
The best way to heal the disenchantment you feel with people in general is not to run away from them but to plug-in and help those less fortunate.
Not to sound melodramatic, but you lack love and good will. You don't feel it and you aren't able to give it.

Get the job, get the money, and then start reading on survivalist topics.
Read up on foraging, what plants are native to your area?
You need money for preperation and supplies.
Start a plan, like in 5 years I want to go some where.
Take small camping trips into the wild. Like a weekend 2 day trip, then you can take a 2 vacation into a deeper wood trip.
The small trips will be the learning experience to prepare you.
Train yourself.

This and the other topic where an individual wrote about wanting to withdraw from the world into the woods has me thinking.

There hasn't been a day that goes by that I haven't often thought of doing the same myself. It is so tempting to want to escape. The world is a mess and all seems without hope. But at this same time I've been reading about George Washington this week and seen the challenges that he and other faced during a critical time in U.S. history. He wanted nothing more than to retreat to his farm at Mt. Vernon and withdraw from the world. His writings are repleat with longing to do just that. But instead he stood up and did the hard stuff to try and make his nation, and in the end, the world a better place. As much as I would like to retreat into the woods I believe I must follow the example of Washington and do what I can to make the world a better place, if even that means doing it in a much smaller, less noticeable way.

That doesn't mean that I don't want to spend time in the woods, prepare for bad times ahead, or improve my skills. Those things are important also but I have a duty to try and stand up and make things better, if only in my own community. Otherwise I do not think I would be living up to the legacy left to me by Washington and generations of those who sacrificed their fortunes, their futures, and even their lives to give me so many opportunities.

My grandparents did not shrink in the face of Axis aggression. To them it must have looked like the whole world was coming apart. Yet they persevered and a brighter tomorrow did come. I cannot let them down.

I have 2 words. National Service. This lad is of the age where he has to do his. He could get away to the wilderness for free AND learn Survival skills! Remember NCO had to do his then went on to college??

That's probably not a bad idea. Get skills, pay, and time to figure out what you want to do in the future. More than a few young men (and women) have benefited from that path. I think Robert Hienlen was on to something with his book Starship Troopers. He makes a compelling argument in that book of the benefits of national service. For the record, the book is nothing like the movie.

You are absolutely right and I've fixed my original post. I was typing fast and got Robert Heinlein and Eric Haney somehow messed together in my mind. Eric Haney wrote Inside Delta Force. I read both in the same month which is probably why I got them mixed in my head this morning! I also enjoyed Robert Heinlein's book Sixth Column. Sixth Column was kind of like a Sci Fi version of Red Dawn. Good stuff!

I'll put this as simply as I can, If you dont like society, just wait until the wilderness gets done with you! If you have no skills, the wilderness will devour you!

As everyone else posted, and I realized the summary of my post was, Join the Military.
You will achieve everything I was advocating earlier. The Survival Training, the money for survival gear etc.

But that's what you're running from isn't it? I just realized, you've finished school. You're about to do your mandatory military service.
Don't worry, it's not hard, I did some cross training in Germany and met some Belgian and Norwegan soldiers. They were pretty relaxed.
Basic training will be sort of tough, but remember, it's only a short time, and it's over. Instead of running from Military Service, try and get the most from it. Learn all you can about outdoor survival. Let the Military train you, and pay you for the priviledge!

They have gotten pretty picky about what they accept these days.

In the old drafted army they would have taken him in a split second and within half a day he would have loved society with all its ills and would have given anything to be back in it!

I don't know about how picky they've gotten; at least here in the states. They don't seem to want the guys who are too transparent about, say, a persistent desire to try killing people just because they've always wondered what it would be like, but then I know a guy who enlisted while under the influence of a bottle or so of robitussin. I also have a family member who was in the Navy for a couple months before they realized she was schizophrenic.

In the spirit of fairness, my Army recruiter was very honest and upfront with me and helped me come to the conclusion that I might not be up to the challenge physically and ultimately that I should not take the risk.

I went to school with more than one guy that volunteered before a judge. I think all but one of them turned out to be good, productive men. That option isn't there today. It's a shame, too.

But is our military here still taking kids? I know of at least one who was deferred.
Mustered up, sworn in, sold their car, quit their job, showed up for the bus and was told, "not today."

I think the trouble is there are really no more frontiers to conquer. Sure I suppose you could go to Alaska and freeze your butt off if you want true wilderness but there is no where left to go. A kid like this might have emigrated when America was young, with nothing but the clothes on his back, to either make his way or not. But even then, it was something to run to, not away from.

Most European countries (Western and non) have a mandatory peace-time draft. A guy would need to show a major (physical/mental) deficiency to be excused. Just being a weezle is not enough.

My grandfather was in the Navy and couldn't swim.

Excuse me but I think the whole objective in the Navy is to not have to swim.

I guess it would depend on the job. I would agree that swimming against ones will is never a good thing out at sea... lol

It is true though. Two of my grandfather's friends basically dragged him across the pool. There were so many people there that nobody could tell. You passed if you made it to the other side. His ship never ended up in trouble but they did sink an enemy sub, he did send some of our enemies swimming :)
