There is plenty to love about Alaska. It was difficult for my wife and I to adjust but there was more to it than just moving to AK. The thing I like the most is the freedom. It's the last place in America that truly gives you that free feeling. I also love the wildlife and scenery here. What I don't like is the long dark winters and the trapped feeling. I'm very thankful I got the opportunity to live here but am glad we are moving to Florida this summer.
The Greater Anchorage Area including Wasilla, Eagle River, Palmer, Big Lake, Military Bases......That whole area is now grossly over populated. But that is where the employment is. And everything south of Anchorage is a tourist trap. Fishing and hunting is so regulated and restricted that 70 percent of the people that live in the bush get food stamps or have some form of public assistance. Alaska doe's not exist anymore. There is no free range left and every squre inch is claimed by some federal agency or native corporation. Less than 1 percent of the land is privately owned so land is over priced. Drinking and drug related crimes are the highest in the nation along with the murder rate. It is only by comparison to the rest of the world does it have anything going for it all. It may seem like wilderness to some but if you come you will take note of just how fast it is disappearing and even what is now will be gone. It WAS "the last frontier".Quote:

Yes, my town is a tourist trap, but that has been a money making opportunity for me when I was doing leather work full time. The laws here are still better then anywhere else. We still retain the highest per capita of veterans at 17%.
A 30 minute walk down the beach at either end of town and I am in the wilderness.

We don't have it here, but just across the state line, they do. They call it the "storm water run-off" tax. It is based on the square footage of your house, driveway, sidewalks, etc. Anything that rain runs off of, rather han soak into the ground.Quote:

Tax Assessment: One of my driveways is assessed at $5,000.-- the other driveways is assessed at $6,500.-- The water well is assessed at $5,500.00 The septic system is assessed at $8,500.--
They were going to assess the cabin until they realized the floor didn't have any insulation. Then they figured it must be a shed and were going to assess it accordingly. That's when ole Sourdough, being the smart pilot biscuit that he is, sited a little known municipal code that stated "tool sheds are not to be assessed". The county assessor argued that there was no way this was a tool shed. Sourdough had that one figured out too. He said "yes sir - this is where I keep my tool". Then he showed him. Ever since then, driveways in Alaska have been assessed. It is rumored that the county assessor will complete his psychological counseling this summer.
