Tatical Bush Knife?

Well I started on another design but this is how it all came out. It kinda struck me as a Tactical Bush Knife if there is such an animal. If not then I guess there is now :) I used the file setup I posted before and wondered how long it would take to make the blank. From start to finish 3 hours with a file and hacksaw. handle and mosaic pins will come later.

so tell me what you think it looks like. I would like to hear your opinion.:smartass:

Stats are 1095 Carbon steel, 1/8th thick, 4.5" handle, 5" blade, 1.25" at widest point on the blade.

I like it. In fact it kinda put me in mind of Rat Cutlery's knives. Or if a Ka-Bar Folding dozier was made into a fixed blade. (I'd buy one).

That looks great! Add the fact that you are not using power tools, and that looks incredible!

Ty ! still a few spots to flatten and smooth out before hardening. Going to use the mosaic pins I showed you on this on and in the big hole of the handle I will be trying a new flaring technique for the copper tubing lanyard hole. Going to make a sheath for this one out of Kydex. Not sure if I want to use the bacote that its sitting on for the handle ore something else.

I am temped to make your home made micarta to round out the knife since then I would have made it all.

I just used bacote for the first time. I really liked it, but am kind of partial to making the micarta for the reason you stated.

Double Ditto........I like it just the way it is. Well done.

Crash I am thinking of a digi-flauge pattern layered for the Micarta. What do you think: woodland, desert, urban, other? I think the digi pattern would go with the tactical look and the black kydex sheath. It should gives some interesting patterns.

The pins looked good too. Two colors my be the ticket as the others looked too busy to me, but hey I am color blind so who cares huh lol Black cotton cloth with gray cloth will do well. Thanks crash

Looks real good. Bocote makes very nice looking scales. It has some terrific grain patterns and really stands out. I (this is just me) rarely use mosaics with wood that can hold their own. I would rather use them with micarta or a staight grained wood so the pins stand out.

I like the idea of the handmade micarta for this knife also, if you made the pins and the blade, you might as well do the scales and the whole knife will be "in house".

I like the look of canvas micarta so I picked up black and khaki for the handle. I will set it up to but it wont be ready till tomorrow. I will have the pins finished today .

Here are the homemade micarta scales for the knife. I doubled up the pattern and it left too big a gap for my liking so I will make some more tomorrow with more alternating layers.

Still, those would look pretty nice on that knife. The gray should flow well into the silver blade. How about a pic with one sitting on the knife just to see it?

Obviously, it's your knife and if you aren't happy with it then you gotta do what you gotta do. I think those look pretty good, though.

I will get ya a pic but I have already made the other micarta. I am using the bow oven to cook it quickly. ready in an hour.

Think I will reshape the the area by the ricasso. its too blocky. mosais look good , sry they are hard to see. i need a better camera or one that will do video.

I have deadlined this knife . Just not happy with it and when trying to polish a set of scratches out that I accidentally put on it before normalizing it made a small dip in the tang so I guess it will go in the junk pile.

New knife on the way however :)

cosmetic flaws do NOT an unusable knife make!

Well, yeah. Throw it in the trash..my trash...you can use my garbage can....just toss it in there. I hate cosmetic blemishes just as much as the next guy.

I was able to remove the offending blemish and now it is going to an young man to be his first real knife. Cant say anymore in case he reads this while his dad is away. All that is left is to buff the blade and put the handles on.

When it comes to my stuff that I make , if it does not come out right then I will trash it. I would say its an OCD thing but the proper order is CDO :innocent:

If I threw out all my knives that had blemishes......well, I wouldn't have very many knives.:blush:

Here is the blade cleaned up and ready to be wrapped in tape and the handle work begins . the woods in the pic are all woods that I can use but I am a nice guy so I will let my friends here chose. In my thick spined knives, 3/16, I will grind the center of the handle and drill multiple hole to lessen the weight of the knife and to give more surface area for the epoxy to hold onto. ON a thin spined knife , 1/8, I scuff the center and drill 4 holes.

I really like the knife and adding "tactical" to it means not a damn thing to me.

I like the shape, handle it how yo want and it will be awesome. Just don't put gunkote on the blade.

its not for me ,its for a young mans first knife. My knife is going to be dressed in the gorgeous piece of Osage Orange in the pic with a flared brass lanyard hole and mosaic pins shaped like the Star of David - I made those too :) - complete with cross draw kydex sheath and fire rod holder. That Osage is going to pop being dressed in all that brass :art:

The Zebra wood, another cool wood, has a camo look
A nice piece of Bacote, excellent grain in this one too

That bacote is the shiznit.

A buddy of mine gets it in very nice grain patterns for use in making custom bows. I get it for 20 bucks a block and a block is 2 by 2 by 18 or 2 by 4 by 24 for 45. Very fair price indeed for that quality. Makes a lot of handles.

He does not know yet :) He Father said he will be teaching him how to care for a knife and its use. It is not as thick spined as my normal knives and I will work the handle just a tad more to better fit his hand. If he takes care of it the knife will last a long time.

I still have old knives from when I was a teen and all the knife knowledge I had was spring steel and stick it in water lol The bevels are more like those found on a crushing weapon rather than a cutting one lol. After a long time I just put them away as they have earned their place to be saved.

Thats the kinda of knives I want to build. Simple, hard working , comfortable and one you will want to save when its time comes.

EA is making this knife for my 12 y.o. son Zach. We planned to make it together, but EA is on vacation and blew through this knife project so fast it isn't even funny. To say that EA is a great guy is an understatement.

Oh, I chose the Osage Orange (Bois D' Arc) for the handle and can't wait to see the look on Zach's face when he get the knife!

Ty guys , I mean that . Zack just left the shop and I promised Swamp that I would not post any pics till he did. Swamprat is a nice fellow and glad to have met him in person. I would def like to have him around , especially when shooting bows as he would make my look good !:innocent: lol That was wrong of me bro lol

I hope Zack enjoys his knife and that it is the key to unlock the outdoors for him and Swamprat to be father and Son. Sry but you just cant charge for that. I was thankful swamp asked me to make it for him.

I hope this encourages others to make a knife they are proud of.
