I hadnt seen them for quite a while but have noticed a few places selling them again. I thought I remembered a ban on making strike anywhere matches once apon a time...was that the case or did they just loose popularity for a while?
Ohio Blue tip "strike anywhere" No Longer Made,,
It looks like ALL strike anywhere matches have a mandatory $26.00 Haz mat charge when shipped, ya dont want to buy them online ;)
I looked around on the web, everybody says the "Diamond" brand sucks compared to the old "Ohio Blue Tips" (but its the only ones you can find other than "storm Matches".
*note, you can still get Ohio Blue tip "strike on box" kitchen matches.
I guess it depends on what part of the country your are looking for them. Around here, grocery stores carry them.
waz goona say i gots me like 10 boxes which is a few yrs supply, thats like 2500 fires, around here they sell them everywhere, ifn ya'll need some just send a pm
Both Ace Hardware & Farm King carry then here. They're about $1.29 at Farm King. :cool2:
Where I work,we carry Diamond brand now,3 250 count boxes for $2.29
I bought some of them, and they work on everything I have tried striking them against so far.
I checked ebay, and saw a waterproof tube with BLUE TIP (32 count) going for $4.99
edit: seller says FREE shipping on those matches
What the heck happened that Ohio Blue Tip matches aren't made anymore??? Gods it's like we don't make anything anymore and when we do it's crap!
Actually, they were bought out by Jarden Home Brands out of Daleville, Indiana who also owns a whole bunch of other companies like Ball Canning, Bicycle and Bee Playing cards, Bionare, Coleman, Sunbeam, Oster, First Alert, Pine Mountain, Mr. Coffee and a bunch more. They're a big company.

No, no. Good thread. Six months ago I was looking all over Heck's half acre looking for them. Diamond's web site has been updated since then. That list wasn't on it before. I'm sure there's others on here trying to find them.
About a year ago, a friend of mine and I were talking about never seeing strike anywhere matches anymore. I started looking for them, and the only place I found them around here, was at Ace Hardware.:innocent: LOL
The old Blue Tips had too much phospate in them. You could cut the heads off, soak them in denatured alcahol and make detonators out of them. You could grind the rest of the head and soak it in alcahol, mix it with some other farm and garden supplies and produce some truely good quality stuff.
Even the new modified ones are good enough to make priming compound for rebuilding primers and making "brown powder" for reloading.
Good to throw in the Magnifying glass (they are .99 cents at Harbor Freight or from a drug store or pop some lenses out of some reading glasses) just in case those matches run out. Starts fires over and over again, never wears out and you can pack it with you in your bug out gear since a reading eye lense or magnifying glass weights almost nothing. A sure fire starter and save the matches for night (or rain) when there is no sun.
If we were simply looking for a sure fire way to start a fire, I am sure the concensus would be one of the many fire steels available, for day or night fire starting.
Hard to light an oil lamp or a wood stove with a magnifying glass. Those are the two main reasons I buy matches for. Plus, most of the year a magnifying glass would do me not good in the woods to start a fire. Rains pert neart every day.
I actually ran across a box of Ohio Blue tips here the other day. It was at an antique store. She wanted $50 for the box.
Needless to say, I did not buy them.
I do keep a lookout at garage sales and such. I have found a couple of boxes. Those get sealed-up and saved.
Think we could start a campaign to bring back the Ohio Blue tip matches?
Ohio Blue Tips were awesome. You could practically light those by striking them on water - which is, of course, why they are now outlawed. Too much liability involved.
I am pretty sure strike-anywhere matches are outlawed in Kalifornia. At least, the box of Diamond mini-strike anywhere matches I bought at my local grocery store recently has a warning on them about not taking them into Kalifornia.
You should have picked them up and asked if they were real....then shake the daylights out of them. That would have got their heart pumping.Quote:

Strike any wheres are widely available down here in Bama. I just bought a box myself, for the purpose of water proofing them. I read awhile back about pouring melted wax over them on a plate then separating them for storage. It should work and who knows when they could come in handy. I know waterproofs are every where, but I prefer to make what I can. With 250 per box, I'm sure my son and I can figure something out.
LOL....I had no idea, thqat strike anywhere matches had become such a big deal. Yesterday, I was at a gun show, and it seemed like everywhere I looked, someone had them on their table, for sale. (I didn't think to look at the prices.)
I think they are making a come back. After all the talk on the forums about not being able to find them the demand has picked up and everyone seems to be selling them now.
Calex - We've talked about that on here a bit. It's pretty easy to do. Put some chunks of wax in a microwave safe dish and use your microwave or you can use a double boiler on a stove. I used the microwave. Heat the paraffin just enough to melt it. Drop in some matches. I used a pair of needle nose pliers to turn them then I laid them out on some aluminum foil to dry. Coat the whole match because if they get wet the water will soak into any exposed wood and can migrate up the match rendering it useless.
To use, remove some of the wax off the head of the match and then strike just as you would any other match.
Clean up is with hot water. It will melt the wax out of the container and your wife won't thump you.
I bought 3 boxes at Hannaford of the strike anywhere's for 2.49, of course when I was there a couple of weeks ago, I bought 3 boxes for 2.49, but when I got home they were the strike on boxes which were right next to the strike anywhere's. So I guess I really have 3 boxes that cost me 4.98, not such a good deal now.
Hello crashdive. I read your post and saw that you live in north florida and can get these strike anywhere matches in grocery stores near you. I live over by tallahassee, fl and can't find them anywhere. Would you mind letting me know where in north florida I can get these matches. It might be worth a drive to me to get some.
thanks, k.
Hey Kevin - welcome to the forum. Publix grocery stores carry them in the Jax area. They should as well in your area. I'm going to be out your way next week for a meeting. I always stop at the Publix just off of I-10 as I come into town to pick up things for the meeting. I'll check while I'm there.
When you get a chance, light on over to the Introduction section and tell us about yourself. We are all looking forward to warm and illuminating conversations.
My local Giant Eagle grocery stores carry the Diamond brands in 3 sizes, reg, long and what they call a safety match with a tin snuffer you move up and squash the flame out rather than dropping it and stomping on it LOL
I guess I didn't realize there was a shortage of strike anywhere matches.
Picked up some while back at a ACE Hardware store.
I do want to pass along a possible disaster preventing tip.
STORE THEM IN A METAL/GLASS CONTAINER.
The reason: MICE.
I had a box, on my work bench, in the shed , at "The Place". (yeah I know, stupid!)
The box had been chewed up by mice........matches had been scattered.........And several had actually fired off!
If the match had caught any others or anything else nearby, I'm sure a major fire would have occured.
Metal box will also help with moisture................
Something I used to do years ago with them to use as a Fire starter was to take 7 SA matches(in a bundle) and dip them in wax. Strike and it will burn long enough to get a fire going.
