Our company built the Nicholas, and about twenty five more like her. They are coming to the end of their life spans, but are still performing very well. It was one of the best shipbuilding programs that the Navy ever had, with the ships well ahead of schedule, and below budget to the extent that the company returned money to the Navy.

The LPD is why there is a need for DDG 51's, Arleigh Burke Class Destroyers. The LPD only has a small anti ship missile launcher on the bow just forward of the port side of the deck house.
