Self Mutilation

As I said in the What Did You Do This Week to Prepare thread, I picked up a couple of 2 burner propane stoves. One of them had a couple of broken legs so I got it for $5. I'm in the process of rebuilding it. I took a wire wheel to it today to get the worst of the crud and rust off of it and got down to a Dremel wire brush. That little piece of @#$@# flipped tiny pieces of wire like shrapnel. Fortunately, I had the good sense to wear safety glasses. I still wound up in the bathroom with the tweesers pulling tiny slivers of steel out of me. I had a half dozen in my face (A full face shield would have been nice) and a couple out of my stomach. Five out of my hands. That Dremel wheel is a mean motor scooter.

Here's the before pic. I'll post the after when I get it done. I'm still in the tear apart phase right now. It's just pieces parts. The dark color in the two corners is WD40. I had to let the old bolts soak before they would come out.

See there...I put myself through agonizing pain...all so I can warn you guys of what will happen without the proper PPE and you don't listen! What a waste of time!

I thought about getting a full face shield today. I really did. But I had no idea that Dremel would through metal like that. The big wire wheel doesn't but that little @#$@#$ sure does.

Yup, me too!! My thumb nail is still screwed up! I made sure to post a warning while I was still bleeding! :) I hope you didnt get it to bad Rick!! Great stove BTW!

I hate picking wire out of my self, man I feel for you, like a needle explosion.

Those little cut off wheels are kinda explodie themselves.

I like the full shields as the don't fog up my glasses as bad as the goggles.

I used a wire brush on a big grinder on a daily basis when I worked at the machine shop years ago. It was part of my daily ritual just before bathtime, to dig wire out of my belly and arms before getting in the shower.

Face shields are cheap. Get one! Don't be an idiot!! or worse, a blind idiot!

Now I get the blind idiot but my sister used to call me a stupid idiot.......Is there such a thing? I figured stupid and idiot were kind of the same. Someone help me understand this.:drool:

It's kind of like using a double negative in a sentence. Either that or she may have some insight that we are not privy to.

You already needed a face lift and a tummy tuck anyway, and the surgeon probably won't charge you extra to clean up the scars.......... :innocent:

OK Rick, you know I'm working on that lantern. I found The Dremel abrasive buffs to be effective on the rust with out the flying wire factor.
Kinda curious did you wear a respirator or just huff the dust particles???

Dremels are intense. I worked for a conservation organization and the own and old-as-dirt monitor barn. It hadn't been used since some time in the 70's, and there was ancient cow poop galore. Anyways, there was a bolt rused on to a stall so badly, I took me and another person 30 min to get off. (No power tools, just wrenched and oil) Then, it was stuck in the wrench which I had to slam on the concrete to get the damn nut off. I wear the nut on a chain on my neck as a sort of trophy.

Well, I went and purchased a full face shield today so life was much better. Finished up the detail stuff. I figured out that a stainless steel wheel doesn't toss wire like a carbon steel wheel does. I'm not sure why that is but perhaps it's just a harder metal and doesn't break off as easy.

Hopefully, everything will be done tomorrow and I'll post some pics. I think this guy is going to turn out okay.

Even though this two burner is a Peerless 102, it looks just like a Griswold 402. The burners are a different shape but mount to the frame exactly the same way. And the legs appear to be identical. I wouldn't be surprised to find out Griswold made this with the Peerless name on it. As I said elsewhere, the stove I have has two broken legs so I'm looking for a couple of replacements. I have made a set of legs for the stove and it looks like they will work just fine but I'd like to have the original legs on it.

If anyone has two Griswold 4.5 inch legs they would be willing to sell, just let me know. Here's some pics of the legs.

One of the leather welders/blacksmiths apron is also a good idea.
Don't have one any more, wish I did, for pouring boolits.

It's really nice when you are dealing with hot, sparky, flying, stuff.

Yes, mom, I got a respirator. The one on the bench needs the cartridges replaced so I picked up a paper one when I got the face shield. AND THANKS FOR ASKING!

Well, I'm finished. I think it turned out okay. I really, really want to replace the two broken legs but it's fully functional the way it is. And man does it toss out some flame. About a foot high from both burners when it's on high.

Hunter - Yes. They are 4 inch black pipe nipples. I used a reducer on top (3/4 to 1/2). I placed a washer inside then bolted the reducer to the burner frame. Then a 4 inch nipple and a cap for feet.

For those of you that don't know what black pipe is, it's used for gas services. You can get it at just about any hardware store. I got it at Ace Hardware.
