Ah, yes. However, all of the bailouts have been tremendously successful, because they slowed the growth in unemployment! :sneaky2:
Just remember that all of the self employed people who are going out of business because they have to PAY for this bullsh!t will NEVER get counted as becoming "unemployed."
where HAVE you been?
Yeah That was what I was thinking about the "Corn and Wheat belt" areas on the Map being the "Lowest" in unemployment. Gives me a little chill to be truthful.
Oh no! "It wasn't as bad as we predicted, so it's got to be the recovery", said economist Forrest Gump.
We all knew for years the way things were going that we were heading for a ditch.
Now that we ARE in one some are actually surprised?
Caught unawares?
Whoa, where did that come from?
Brace yourself boyz 'n girlz 'cause the wheels are coming off next.
And then when we're at the very bottom and can't get any lower, things will get better. I promise.
They are already starting to thank goodness.
I wish the S would really HTF then we wouldn't have to worry bout all this nonsense.
Living in Michigan and knowing the way this country has been run for the past 100+ years it's not surprising to me at all.
Things are going to get much worse before they get better. And they won't get that much better, or better at all, for the majority of people living in this country.
Last time I checked the unemployment rate was near 15- 20% locally.
Interestingly enough some folks are benefiting greatly from this state we're in.
fortunately or un; it rarely does so all at once. rather, it tends to raised slowly into the fan so we get the nice drizzle of spatter.Quote:

it could be much worse, and you won't find me wishing for it to get there.
actually, i kinda agree with that. I don't wish it to hit, but if it's gonna I wish it would happen all at once rather than slow and agonizingly.
Well luckily I have very little to lose. I feel sorry for all those fat cat bankers and all them rich people that are losing millions of dollars. :) Man I think someoe should give them a bail out or some type of assistance.
Because neither my Wife nor I could draw unemployment, we are not counted as unemployed either. Most folks laid-off around here either could not draw unemployment, or they have been laid-off for so long that it has run out and they are no longer on the rolls. Unofficial unemployment around here is estimated to be 25% to 55%. Official is ONLY 18%.
I guess I should have been a little more specific. I knew it was bad, real bad. I hear the "Numbers" all the time. But it is a different story when you have a visual aid like this. What makes it even worse is the realization that there are those that are "dropping out" of the numbers because they are no longer even considered in these numbers. When you take into account those that don't even show up in the numbers(Self-employed,Farmers, and such as this) it is worse when you think about it. But to actually see it growing like some Science Fiction disease or mold... Then taking into account that it is actually worse than they are saying in these numbers....
In my area, there continues to be lay offs even when work remains the same or actually increases. There are easily 20-30 people looking for a single job opening.
I know many that are currently employed, are angry at those "Who are sitting on their duffs Drawing our taxpayer dollars". But when there aren't enough jobs to "go around" what is there to do? I know OWVC said something about relocating, But to where? It is just as bad everywhere. I'm sorry folks but we are no longer in a "Recession", although things continue to recede. That is/was my point. It is (when you stop to think about it) worse than we are being told. Everywhere I have looked it is the same story.
But here is my real surprise/shock..... I am surprised that membership on forums of this type hasn't quadrupled. With things looking so bleak, why aren't more coming and joining? For the members view the "Who's Online" function, Keeping in mind that some of the "Lurkers" are spy bots and spiders, why haven't even those numbers grown? Is there really that many that are not looking forward to the possibility of a bleak future, that are oblivious to where this COULD lead? That skills that are taught on these types of Forums COULD become a necessity of their possible continued survival? Is there really that much Apathy? THAT is what really scares me.
Poco, I hear you. And although the real situation is disconcerting, it shouldn't affect what each one of us does to take control of our own predicament.
What scares ME is not that more people aren't joining forums like this one but that more people aren't out there actually doing anything and everything to help themselves out.
If illegal immigrants can find work for less than a minimum wage then
surely we can too. Collect cans, sweep streets, wash dishes in a diner, I don't care what, just get off the couch, turn the computer off and get busy.
Maybe someone can't pay you $10 to shovel their driveway but they'll pay you $2. Fine. Do it. It's more than you started with.
What ticks me off is that a lot of people are still not willing to do whatever it takes. And if they are not willing to do it now, how are they going to do it when SHTF?
It's not the skill they lack, it's the willpower.
Small business accounts for 80 to 90% of all newly created jobs, but small business isn't getting any help, it is all going to the fat cat uber business' why "becuase they are too big to fail" BS! If they can't make it then let them drop dead someone with good business sense will fill the void.
although I agree with getting off the couch and doing something to help yourself it doesn't always work.
One could go out and shovel driveways for 2 bucks a pop, but one would not have more than one started with. It would cost gas, maintenance, new shovels, golves, boggins, salt, etc. One would most likely be in the hole.
Also, if one were to take a job for minimum wage even it would not pay the gas ands such to get to from work when you consider in taxes, insurance and everything else.
If we were living in ancient times where one could go out and build a primitive shelter in a large untouched tract of "good land" then ya, it would help alot, especially if there were no taxes to pay, roads to improve, schoolbooks to buy, etc. etc.
Around here, and I'm talking locally. The cost of rent and such is so high one cannot live on minimum wage. Also, illegal immigrants generally live many to a house and have large families. Some of us don't have that option.
What do you tell all the employees of GM if you just "let them fail". Or Wells Fargo or any of the other bail out beasts? Don't you think there comes a point when a company is SO large that it's cheaper to bail them out than to suffer the impact of their failure. After all, it's not just the CEO and BODs. It's all the employees, suppliers, delivery folks, parts dealers, dealerships, body shops, etc. etc. All of them could go under as a result. Think for a moment the impact that would have on the economy. According to wiki they employ 244,500 employees world wide. Probably four or five times that number rely on them as suppliers, manufacturers and other related industry. If GM goes down then you have somewhere in the neighborhood of 1 million give or take suddenly without incomes. So it's not that easy to just "let them fail".
You know, I see your logic and part of me agrees - and part of me doesn't.
In addition to executive greed, one of the things that drove GM to the brink was the demands of the unions. They make a lot more in wages and benefits than non-automotive employees working on similar assembly lines. When health-care and other employee benefits add substantially more to the price of a car than the metal required to build it, something is just plain wrong.
How about the non-automotive workers who have lost their jobs. Aren't their families suffering just as badly?
