I'll bet you're wondering why this thread title ended up in the "Making Stuff" area......Well, my new grinder came in today. As you can see – it is a bit larger than my old one. I have noticed rather quickly that while it will remove metal much faster than my little one, it will also remove anything else that contacts it with equal quickness (I was wearing gloves).

I had already cut out the shape and drilled/filed the handle – it’s not done yet, but so far so good.

Jason = trust me when I say - it ain't all that organized. That's what it looks like when you sweep a pile of "useful items" out of the way to set up your new grinder. As to the staining ----- shhhhhh - that'll be our little secret.

If you show up at the next jamboree with a flat nose and forehead we'll know what happened.

Yeah sure go ahead and make my bare shop look even worse, by showing off a new toy... By the way Nice sander/grinder. Is that a knife,an axe or a hybrid of the two? LOL looks good whichever it is. Probably could do both with it huh?
Did you use a half bottle of iodine on your belt burn?

The yellow is actually staining from the gloves I was wearing. They got wet as I dipped the blade in a bucket of water for cooling it.

The way you said it in your post about it removing "anything else" as quickly as metal, I thought you had gotten Bit by it already. Glad it was just wet gloves,and not iodine.

I have found a better way for cooling is to use warm oil, it cools the metal better and helps in the temper process. Just how I do it though.

Beo - the water is just to keep the blade cool enough to handle after a pass on the belt. When I'm done, I'll harden it in a forge and then temper it.

i re-ground the bevel on my little skinner and the blade overheated. now i have to heat treat again, and now i keep water next to the grinder too.

Crash, do you use a jig to maintain the bevel on the knive? There isn't a rest table on the sander so I was just wondering how you keep the bevel?

No jig. There is an adjustable tool rest that sits in front of the platen (removed in the pictures). I didn't use it for the flat grind - which started out as an attempt at a hollow grind. I asked the guys that were showing me about using the tool rest. They pretty much only use it for profiling the blade. Still feeling my way around that.

Congrats Crash! She's a beauty! Now let the spark making begin. I am still working on funding that Bader3 I told you about. Look into the Blaze belts they are supposed to last along time compared to other brands.

Congratulations on the new grinder Grizzly makes good tools at a decent price. The blade looks nice, can't wait to see the handle you put on it.
