Remember that stave that bent a little funny with the hinges?

Well, here it is getting a layer of sinew after is was straightened a bit and the hinges were addressed.

Do you steam the hinges to straighten them? Coming along nicely!!
What I did to fix the hinge was to take wood off before and after it. This usually drops the weight, but the limb then flex's through.
The hinge is basically a spot that is weaker than the area before and after it. Work those areas down and you get the limb balanced.
I steamed the limb ends to put the recurve into them. Get your spaghetti pot out and fill with water. Lay the area that you want to bend over the pot and cover with aluminum foil. Let boil, turn every now and then for 15 min., try to bend, then stick it back on the boil and leave for another 15 min., then it usually bends real nice.
Once you bend it, keep it bent. Strap it down with a belt and let it cool for a half to an hour. Walla, recurve. You can also take this opportunity to take out any twists so it lays on the recure form flat. Had to do it with this bow.
I've bent wood using that same method. I generally take a piece of wood and drill holes in the same shape of the curve I'm setting. Inset wood pegs into the board to hold on opposite sides of the project then insert the project into the template after it's steamed and let it dry. The template will hold it in place (if you made the template right) and maintain the curve you want.

I use my bows for both hunting and target shooting.
I try to trade for osage as I've made a point not to purchase any wood. The ponybow, the two staves at 10 bucks each was just too good to be true. My bud picked up a full length stave for 10 bucks at the knapp in.
The 58" osage was purchase, oh, about 6 years ago. It's been sitting in the downstairs that long. The bow I've hunted with for the last 8 years, it's osage and I traded a large otter skin I tanned for the stave and some english flint. I try to trade alot.
After the 58", I have an osage slat which will do well backed or with horn, then the 42" stave and that's it for osage. I will start on this big ol hickory long, a white oak stave, and the elm tree that I split awhile back.
I may be breaking some wood after the osage is gone as osage is a very forgiving wood. Hickory is forgiving also, just needs to be sealed very well. Elm, well ya have good elm and not so good elm. Hope I have the good stuff.
If you want to buy osage, go to paleoplanet and primitive archer as I think ya will get the best deals there. Also, many times those who post on one site, post on many other sites.
If you want to back your osage, you may be able to pick some up at a local hardwood lumber store. It's kiln dried board but will do just fine. This is where you can gets a bunch of hickory board if you're just starting out.

FVR will red oak work for a bow?
There are many red oak bows out there. Sometimes they need to be backed. Check out this site and read about board bows. Jawge will answer all your questions.

Poncho - I do a lot of work in red oak. I have about 1200 board feet of right now. It can be an unforgiving wood that tends to chunk out and/or split if you are not patient with it. A little at a time is a lot with Red Oak.
Thanks guys. I had a piece on hand that I was going to use for handles. I'll just hold out for some osage.
Poncho - I didn't mean to give the impression that is true for bows. I know didly about bows. I'm not a bowyer. That was just a comment on Red Oak in general. I re-read my post and it wasn't as clear as it should have been. I know nothing about making bows.
What exactley does the backing do? What would happen if ther were no backing on a bow like the red oak bow?
