11th Hour List
Scenario: The SHTF but there is a brief opportunity (a day or so) to pick up some last minute supplies.
While the masses are cleaning out the grocery stores, what are you buying up?
For us: more firearms and ammo, more gas (if there is not a line at the stations), propane, hardware such as nails and screws, batteries, rock salt, clothing, trade goods (tobacco, liquor, ?) ...
Any ideas for last minute stuff?
---
DEFINE: SHTF - well if I could do that, I could really be prepared! I'm talking serious long-term economic disaster, socio-political turmoil (e.g. war), possibly terrorism, collapse of civilization - more along the lines of TEOTWAWKI kind of scenario. I think we may well be headed towards a perfect storm: depression, famine, world war, terrorism, something out of left-field. The first three have happened all together not that long ago - just add in a little terrorism. I'm actually more afraid of a long, slow agonizing decline (as we seem to be in now) than in a more quick "reboot" of civilization.

Define SHTF. It will make a difference as to what I do. If I stay put, probably nothing. If I am forced to leave I'd top off the fuel tanks.
-
Rick, Sometimes you just can't run and the only thing to do is "hunker down" and try to survive, e.g., Berlin, 1945.
-
That was my point. That's why I said if I stay put. So he needs to define SHTF. Power outage, Blizzard, extreme cold, flue epidemic/pandemic, earthquake, I'll probably bug in. In that case I have everything I need for some time. Probably a couple of months depending on who's here. I don't and won't stock for 1 year or more.
Anything else I'll throw my BOBs in the vehicles, top off the tanks and head to Trax's house or Hopeak's.

I've always thought that the US would never suddenly end from forces outside itself. But rather rot slowly from within. The economy gets worse, the debt increases even more, the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer. People lose their jobs, and tax collections are down. Lawlessness gradually worsens and the police cannot get to all the 911 calls as police budgets are cut. That sort of thing.
That being said, there is not much I would go to the store for and risk my personal safety with a half-crazed, and unprepared, populace. Maybe I'd get things the average person would not think of, such as PVC pipe and funnels, to help make water purifiers and such.
When the power outage happened in 2002, I think it was, none of the stores had any more bottled water, at all, anywhere in town. The one store I went to had no water on the shelves, and neighbors reported the same thing in other stores.
I can take risks, but I prefer to take calculated risks. Where it is more in my favor that I will get what I'm searching for.
-
I have never gotten to excited about the whole SHTF stuff. I've lived through very hard times. I remember my Mom crying and broken because she didn't know how she was going to feed her children. Facing winter with no fire wood put up because the SOB step dad left for parts unknown. No way to get to town even if we had money. I am prepared for the things that are most likely to happen here. Severe weather or Natural disaster. I don't believe in my life time that our country will be attacked and overrun by Commies, Muslims or anyone else. We may go through some tough economic troubles but I don't think it will destroy us and send us into the dark ages. I don't hold with the "Doom and Gloomers" or the "Conspiracy theorist". Don't get me wrong. I see nothing wrong with putting a little aside for hard times. Just don't be consumed by it.

[QUOTE=bulrush;50715]I've always thought that the US would never suddenly end from forces outside itself. But rather rot slowly from within. Like 1966 through 1976, Racial riots, anti-war riots, it is hot and I am bored riots, campus riots, no gas available riots, 20% unemployment riots, 18% inflation riots, Drugs everywhere........... This is a stronger country than we think, and when "IT" get's tough, this country get's tough......:):):)

id have to also agree with the op id be getting odds and ends last minute ammo, hardware, definitely tobacco products(they used tobacco trading alot back in the day i figure if tshtf things will be fairly similiar)
-
If it is major SHTF gonna be years until back to some kind of "normal" I think food is paramount - even dry dog food (stores great).
-
I'm more of a bug-in mindset, but prepared to bug-out if needed. Last minute stuff if I knew things would not be returning to normal anytime soon?.......Not really too much that I don't already have, maybe more cash since ATM's and banks probably OOC.
-
For me bugging out is not an option. I've prepared all these years to stay put on the homestead. My only big concern is forest fires. With the dugout built and full of water, chainsaws at the ready and 3 pressure pumps primed and ready to go, I'm confident even then I could stay put.
-
If possible I would buy that Porche 911 I've been eyeballing.:D
Other than that it would really depend on availability.
Additional food, water, fuel would top my list.
-
I'm like crash, i plan on bugging in as long as possible, then bugging out if need dictates it, shtf in my mind will be an economic collapse or a super bug, in which case it will be the lawless denizens half starving and scared that will be the most prevalent threat to me which is why i have chosen my location, very far out of town decreases chance of unwanted visitors

Painkillers, handtools, ammo.
-
For me, I stay home, I have most of what I wll need here. But as to what I would go after, food and seeds would top the list.
