What's the general opinion on Cold Steel these days?
Cold Steel is a good company in my book. They have some solid offerings. They also have some oddball stuff but their Bushman series is excellent as are their tomahawks and shovels.

I'm not too fond of their machetes. But I guess some would say I'm over abusive with them. They end up warping too easily for me. I like the KaBar kukri (can't say enough good stuff about it), Ontario military machete, and so far have been pleased with my Marbles machete.
Even a thin bladed "grass" machete can cut down a fairly large tree if it is alive (green). But you must use proper technique, angle and stroke etc. Best to buy a tool for the primary purpose you will be using it for. There are several very good manufacturers of machetes to choose from and hundreds of models depending on you primary application. $32 is actually a fairly generous budget especially if you sharpen it yourself. I.e. no fancy concave grind or whatever, this will not last long on a thin blade so not worth the extra $10 IMO.
Tramontina makes a great machete for little money.
I trust the Cold Steel brand. I've never used anything made by them that I didn't like.
The hawks and machetes worked good for me, but the durability wasn't that great. Both had several chips in them, the hawk only after a few minutes of use.
I don't have a problem with the Cold Steel products I've used. I have not used their machete. I guess the question comes - what do you want it for? I'd have trouble spending 3 to 4 times of what I spend on a Tramontina (I have several) for a tool that was intended for the same purpose. Of course, practicality goes out the window (for all of us) when we just want it because.
As stated in my original post, the Kopis will be for cutting a path through tall grass and brush. I just picked up a Kopis for $28 shipped.
