I found a document from March 1941 in which Stalin proclaimed the benefits of batoning. In June they were invaded. Barbarossa in German means, only barbarians baton. I guess he was serious.

I am more concerned why you need to baton an axe...I guess I know why the Georgians baton a potato...their potatoes must be really tough...but to baton an axe? Maybe they cook the handle.
Not sure if people do actually do that, but I've never seen it done before
