char cloth is fun to make

testerday i made bout 20 pcs, of char cloth with at shirt of mine still have plenty of shirt left
so today i think i,ll make some more. why not. i used a tin that had butter cookies init
from the dollar store the tin is 2in h x 5,1/2 -6 in wide perfect for making char cloth.
if you find a few of these tins they make nice little survival tin.

We have not had a good charcloth thread since that last newbie got banned for going ape $#!t when someone told him there was another way to make char cloth !

Not that that is going to happen to you Hayshaker, just that it takes all kinds, only not that kind, and not here.

I have always had problems making big batches in a large tin.

I can not get a uniform char, with the cloth on the outer edges being too crispy and the inside layers not even being discolored.

I get more uniform results from smaller batches.

Whatever works for you...

Easiest way to get great charcloth is to use mil surplus cleaning patches (100%cotton). Stuff about 10-20 in an Altoids tin and use a short piece of wire to wire the lid shut. If it pops open during the char it will ruin the batch.

Throw on top of your campfire or stove, outdoors of course, and let it cook until most of the smoke quits coming out of the tin. Rake it out and let it cool before opening. Proper charcloth should be a dull black and not flaky. If it's brown, not cooked long enough. If gray or ashy, you let air get in while cooking.

A bit of practice and you'll be turning out the best charcloth you have ever seen. You can also use cotton t-shirt material or old blue jeans. I like to use the old USGI cleaning patches because I have a lot of them.

Store in freezer bags and avoid crushing. For field use I keep it in a clean Altoids tin wrapped in a cut-up baggie. This is to avoid dampness. Good charcloth will catch even a weak spark and hold it while you wrap it in your tinder.

The easiest way to know when your char cloth is done. As soon as I see smoke coming out the small vent hole I light it, it will burn like a candle, once that flame goes out your done.

kyratshooter, i did not do the whole 20pc at once i made about six pcs at a time.
and it turned out well. ape poo ape poo woo oo woo ther i got it out of me i not gunna get banned now am i hope not.
to day i made some more, though i had to redo the last batch brown in the midddle thing the coals were pretty
cooked down at that point tossed in more charcoal and finished it off.

I use a soup can inverted into a vegetable can. I fill the soup can with cotton cloth cut to size, invert it into a vegetable can, punch a pin sized hole in the soup can and set it in the fire with the pin hole up. The off gassing will ignite and a small flame will burn until the cloth is charred. Once the flame goes out, as Graf said, the char cloth is done. Easy peasy.

Got this idea some time ago after see char rope made. This is done with a full cotton web belt. Simply loosen the buckle and slide out of the way, light the belt and char a small section. now when you need a char piece remove your belt move the buckle out of the way and get a spark, these belts also can be used as kerosene lamp wicks, always like multiple purpose things.

Came across and old welder striker, I think I am going to adapt it to put in our pack. I plan on taking the round part and cuttin the handle of so you can hold the round part in one hand and take about two inches or so from the striking arm and attaching a small chain to keep it together. Should be more compact that way, I know it will throw a heck of a spark.:thumbup1: Thanks for the Char cloth ideas, gonna get some made up this weekend.

I guess I never considered making char cloth "fun"....just something you do to keep your gear up dated and fresh.

Like small batches as I do think the even nest fo the char is important, and the fact that it get damp....or seems to and makes it harder to catch a spark, with traditional flint and steel...Not a ferro rod.

Save my pillow ticking patches (the pieces left over after cutting one), and have even picked up shot patches at the range.
The cotton cleaning patches work well as doe s really old blue jeans stuff.
Make it as you go along, and keep in water proof tin or bag....makes it much easier to light,... later.

I made a batch of char cotton balls a few weeks ago, it was easy and they worked a real treat! I should try some of the cotton rounds next time..

But I still have pet. jelly cotton balls as my number one fire trick, it has never failed me!

I like having multiple tools in my tool box, so the skill of making char "something" is good to have on hand!
