I know i watched my brother attempt it by steaming it over a pot of boiling watet covered with foil. Then he bent it over a pre shaped puece of wood to get the ends to match. He started getting it but went too fast and broke it.
heat/steam or over fire..then placed in something like a jig so that the bent stays.
I saw it somewhere on google.
so tokowan am i on the right track kinda with the jig thing and all?
Yep..I am sure of that...make one and let me see..then make me one and send it over..I will pay once you tested it.

i just wish i could ride a horse.he he.
No joke ..I have been looking for a traditonal american bow.
With a lament bow, you use a form. The simplest way to explain it is that you cut the shape of the bow into two piece of wood, and then glue strips of field maple and/or english walnut together and clamp them into the two pieces of wood.
The type of bow your talking about is called a recurve bow.
There are a bunch of diy recurve bow howtos on the interweb.
"Hunting with the Bow and Arrow" by John Young and Saxson Pope has a section on building bows in the traditional way. Maybe you can get it thru your local library.
I know nothing about how to make bows but here's a document that might be of some help.

you need dry heat or steam to make the wood pliable and then set it in a form. Be ready to break a few because it takes practice and is a little different depending on the current weather conditions and moisture in the wood. Contact Jim Hamm about getting the Bowyers Bible set, I think there are 4 volumes now, I have 3. BTW, Jim is a great guy and will help in any way possible to get you started
Best instructions I found out of the 130,000 google hits on "how to build a recurve bow".

Just about any question you might have on bow making or arrow fletching you will find the answer too on the Primitive Archer forum.
TradGang is good too.

Paleo planet might be closer to your interests. If you wind up over there you will spend the next week in their archives.
