A Couple of AK Questions

I have a Yugo underfolder that I purchased from Century. There are two items on it I can't figure out. The first is a tab at the base of the shoulder rest. I've highlight it in red in the folder. At the bottom of the shoulder rest on the pic. What is the tab for?

The second item is my AK has two rear sight blades. One of them is on a swivel so that it can be used when the rear sight is in the vertical position. At least that's what it looks like. The problem is the rear sight can not be placed in a vertical position and stay there because there is no detent or stop to hold it there. Anyone know what the swivel blade is used for? This one is a set up as a grenade launcher if that helps.

The tab on the stock is the bottle opener.

Honestly, I can find no specs on the tab. It is probably there to be bent in or out in order to stop excess wobble in the folded position.

Are you speaking of the grenade sight that is on the front gas block. That is the grenade sight and also shuts off the gas block for grenade firing.

There is no need for a "rear sight" for grenades, since that lever serves as the rear grenade sight, lined up with the top of the grenade.

One does not shoot grenades and bullets at the same time since the lever shuts off the gas flow to the action and blanks are used in the grenade launching mode.

The Yugo has the launching device built in but other AK variants require a clip on device on the muzzle to fire grenades, like the old M1 system used by the US. All require blanks for launching the grenade.

I have never seen an AK with a flip up or swivel leaf rear sight.

Check and see if the sight blade has two different types of notch for sighting. It might be that the swivel is intended for fine sighting with the elevator in the top setting rather than standing straight up. I can not imagine a fine notched "long range" 1000 yard rear sight on an AK???

There are so many variants on the market, and they are being prepped for 922 compliance by so many firms, that it is almost impossible to keep up with all the bits available.

That's a good call on the tab. It does lay flush against the bottom of the forearm. That's probably what it's for.

I should have posted pics on the rear sight. I just thought someone might know what it was used for. Anywhoo.....

It can't be used with the grenade launcher. At least I don't think it can. That would drop the grenade about 4 feet in front of you if lined up with the highest notch on the front fold up grenade sights. But as I said, there is no detente to hold the rear sight in the vertical position so I'm lost as to what it's used for.

You have got me opening gunsafes that have not seen the light of day in some long time and I can find nothing that looks remotely like that on anything soviet or Chinese that I own.

Like I said before, there are so many variations of the AK it is nearly impossible to keep up with all the details and gadgets. Most folks think there was a single patented AK and all came off the machine just alike. It was not like that at all. There was no such thing as a patent in the eastern block. If you liked it you made it, you changed it to suit your needs or whims and as long as it took 7.62x39 ammo no one seemed to care.

This is definitely a case of "revenge of the nerds" Yugoslavian style.

They put that on there just to drive American web-surfing shooters off their gourd, because a Yugoslavian soldier would say "Who gives a *%&! get in the truck and shut up!"

I think I would go straight to the AK forums and post the picture and query. I am sure they have someone that knows about it there, since they live and breathe AK.

BTW, that zero (0) setting on the AK tangent leaf is the combat zero. It is the same as the 200m setting and good from the muzzle to 250. Not dead on anywhere but 200, but close enough for "man killing".

I have often wondered why the AK did not just have a 100m/200m flip over sight. 1000m graduations on an AK are a bit of a laugh.

I don't think eastern block fighters are trained to estimate range. They just look over the wall, count heads and make sure all their mags are full.

Have you found your Yugo to be reasonably accurate?

I decided against the under-folder because there is no way to attach a side mount scope. I put the side folder on mine, but I can not shoot it with the stock folded like you can with the swing under stock.

Sure does make it handy in a vehicle though.

It's close enough on accuracy. I haven't put it on paper yet but I can pop clay skeets at 75 yards. Not every time of course but close enough for, as you put it, man kill.

I took my wife to the range on Saturday to let her plink with a rifle. We were shooting the 10/22 with 4x at 75 yards and the lady can put your eye out. She missed the first one twice then proceeded to show me how to do it. I took the AK just to check function and make sure it actually worked. It was its first time out.

That's a good thought but no. They are cut at the same depth. The width is slightly different but not enough to see it when you shoulder the weapon. At least I can't see a difference. If it were a distance thingy I would think the wider cut would be in front. That would let you drop the narrow rear blade and provide a larger picture but it's just the opposite.

Can one be adjusted for elevation and the other for windage?

My first thought on the sight was a night sight. Just like the night sights that flip up on the M16/M4. But looking at it I don't think it's that. I'm not very familiar with the AK. I'm way more knowledgable on the M4 and SCAR platforms. I agree, you should check out some of the hundreds of AK forums. Those guys live, breathe and pray AKs.

AK windage adjustment is done on the front post, with a 3/8 punch and 9 pound sledge! Only time you will need it is if you bend the barrel and have to straighten it out using the fork of a big tree. The front sight has index marks where you line up the sight post with the mark on the sight block and it is pretty much a done deal.

Soviet hardware is made to be picked up off the battlefield and used immediately. They have never forgotten WW2. You can pick up an AK, slosh the mud and gravel out of it in a puddle, check the front sight index mark, put the rear sight in 0 setting, rack a round into the chamber and start shooting. None of this "how many clicks up or to the right", or "am I sighted in?" crap. You are going to hit within 6" of where you aim out to 250m.

I watched a show called In the Crosshairs yesterday. It's about famous sniper shots. It featured Chuck Mawhinney and his infamous 16 kills, 16 rounds in 30 seconds. It should be noted that not one sniper on the show used an AK. Just sayin'....

16 shots/16 kills, using a starlight scope on an m14, at less than 100 yards in a "target rich" environment ???

He could have done that with the starlight scope on a good 12 gauge using slugs!

Even Simo Hayha separated his kills with a Mosin from his kills with a SMG.

As for choosing the AK as a sniper round ???

Mine shoots 1 1/2"@100 with surplus ammo, but it is not a "long range rifle". Never was intended to be one.

The AK is actually a "hot rod" sub machine gun, not a reduced power rifle.

Look at the specs for the Pps43 smg. Same size, within an inch of the same length. It even uses the exact same folding stock. Just stretch out the 7.62x25 round out to 7.62x39, beef up the stampings a little, steal the action off an M1carbine and turn it upside down and there you go!!!
