Bragg,s down

Just got back from the hospital and it looks like I'll survive. Sixteen stitches and a fancy removable fibreglass cast.

I went out this afternoon on my ATV to check fences and with the weather so nice alot of melting is happening. With the snow melting, the ice is exposed underneath. I headed up a trail and about three quarters of the way up I knew I was in trouble. Spun out almost near the top and started going backwards faster then when I was going up. I had two choices, go with the flow or bail. I went with the flow and ended up off the trail and going over a 12' sheer ledge. As the ATV was going over the ledge I jumped clear injuring my left elbow and breaking my wrist. My ATV did a nose dive bending the frame I'm sure.

After checking for more injuries and shock of what happened wore off I called for my wife. I always carry a Garmin Rhino with two way radio and paged my wife. She called my neighbor and they came out the 8km's to get me. I rode back on my wife Lisa'a quad and Caleb & Mike towed my ATV back to the house. I will be sore tomorrow.

I will be wearing my helmet for now on. It could have been worse.

Yes, you are lucky. That could have been so much worse. I'm glad it didn't turn out any worse than it was. So, now it's sympathy from the wife and kids time. If they start giving you any flak just sort of hold onto the wrist and repeat after me, "Hold on. This thing is really starting to hurt." Just remember, you can only use that until the cast comes off. If you use it after the cast is removed the jig will be up.

Good to hear that you came out ok. Look at the bright side - you can spend more time on the forum.:D

And who knows, his typing might improve.:D

Ahhhh. That's not so bad. I get one finger alot!

That was a good example of why you should be prepared like you were. The next lesson should be simulated! Get well soon!

And think about what you would have done if the 4 wheeler had landed squarely on the Rhino. Water on hand? Fire starting kit? Shelter? Signal device?

I alway carry a small first aid kit. I used four Kendal Tendorsore gauze pads and a tensor bandage for the gash and the other tensor for my wrist. Water isnt too far around here and under a big spruce tree would have made good shelter. My Garmin Rhino's can see where each radio is at with in about 8 km's. If I had been any farther out she would have not heard the page. My wife knows the fence trail well and how long it normally takes. I maybe would have waited for her maybe 3-4 hours as I sometimes just park and enjoy the view or find something interesting. I dont think I would have worried about staying out all night.

My concern was not having a helmet on and getting a head injury. Big wake up call. I would have been screwed. Didnt think I needed one being on my own property. Thats all gonna change.

I will speak with my insurance company on monday to either have my quad repaired or replaced. I dont trust riding around here with a bent or damaged frame.

Good idea with the helmet. A tree branch was my downfall and the helmet saved my hide. I don't like them but WV has had more deaths in the last couple of yrs and I don't want to add to it.

Glad you're OK Bragg, but you don't mention eye protection - if you haven't already, you might want to consider that too. A friend of mine got a poke in the face from a branch while riding his quad. It missed his eye, but not by much. Just a thought.

Good plan, Bragg and sharing it on the forum allows others to recognize that you don't have to be hundreds of kilometers into the bush to have something bad happen. Things like that can happen close to home and having the right equipment, like you had, can make all the difference. Good post.

Glad you did not pull a Gary Busey on the farm. Helmets are your friend. I know that Rick and WV and most of the grunts on here can tell you a good helmet story. I hope you get well soon.
