Who do you truly think will be the survivors of a SHTF scenario? Obviously there are a million different scenario's, but let's just take this: A virus outbreak.
a. YOU and your friends lol
b. Military/Police citizens
c. Prisoners
d. Doctors
e. Preppers
f. Big-city people
g. Small-city people
h. WSF people! :D
i. Other?
Me but not my friends. My friends are good for sitting in a bar drinking beer but no so big on starting fires and sleeping outside.
There are just too many variables to guess. Type of virus, rate of transmission, incubation period, death rate, etc. We have epidemics every year. Generally the old, the young or those with weakened immune systems are the ones that typically succumb. Even the most casual of interactions, picking up a penny on the ground, could hold a virus. If pressed, I'd have to say those that keep their fingers out of their nose and eyes and are just plain lucky stand the best chance. Outdoor skills will do little to protect you.

I think surviving a virus outbreak would depend more on your overall health and your immune system and less on survival skills. You can master all the skills in the world, but if your immune system is weak, then it is a coin toss !

I think most of the survivors in the US would be country people that are somewhat isolated form big cities and hordes of people, and preppers that have enough sense to isolate themselves and live on their preps until the virus blows over. Isolation from the public would be the key to survival in any type of pandemic breakout.
So I would say me and my friends, preppers, and country people that can be self sustaining!
Unless, of course, it's air borne. And you don't receive mail or parcels. Your kids don't go to school. You never go to the grocery. Or it has a long incubation period. Some are measured in weeks. The incubation period for chickenpox is 1-2 weeks. So you might be infected before anyone even knows there's a pandemic. Like I said, lot's of variables.
But you have to admit that people in large cities would be at a much greater risk. I guess nothing is for sure when it comes to viruses and such!Quote:

A bird flu influenza transmitted through chickens or geese might well start out more rural as might something insect born since rural folks tend to be outside more than urban. Meningitis or tuberculosis, on the other hand, could run amok in an urban environment if not contained.

I'd have to say I'd last a short time. Probably meet my end either from infection or starvation. And thats on hard thinking, with events lately leaving me feeling like SHTF isn't far off. At best I've got 2 cheap bandage kits and a few dollars to buy non-perishables to cover me for a short time, but with the cost of living and barebone income I can't help but feel choked out.
If some disease was airborne, or even spread by touch......with the amount of travel, to/from so many countries or even in or own country so quickly......would be hard to stop.
Knowledge, general health, diet,hygiene,....as well as not being in a large group constantly may be the secret....as well as DAL.
So my serious answer to the question would have to be small city, lack of contact, .....and WSF members....for having the concern and knowledge to deal with it.
The question I find interesting on this subject is at what point would you stop having outside contact? Would it already be too late? If you work or you have kids in school when would you stop both? Would you ban family at the door? Some tough decisions might have to be made in a pandemic and even if you are willing to make them you might do so too late to make a difference because of the incubation time. You might already be infected but not have any symptoms.
The only thing you could do is isolate yourself and immediate family as soon as you hear that the pandemic is spreading, and hope for the best. And yes, once i have declared isolation, all visitors would be turned around no matter who they are! It's the only way to handle it in my opinion.
