EveryDay Carry

Hi,
I am new to this site. I am wondering if my I have all the appropriate items for an urban (i live in new york city) Everyday carry system.


Mini crowbar
mini flash light
thermometer/stopwatch/compass
whistle
mulitool
glass punch

Any other thoughts on what to add or even subtract?

I would remove the stop watch and thermometer, glass punch, not much value there. Get a better flashlight, wrap some duct tape around the flashlight for bandages and whatever. Add some water purification tablets, bic lighter or ferro rod, small knife possibly neck knife. Replace shoe laces with paracord. Also suggest a decent water bottle. Will the mini crowbar do anything that the multi tool won't? Concentrate on multi uses of your EDC items it will help reduce the amount you need to carry.

Actually, for NYC that's not too bad of a list. That glass punch might be pretty handy to exit a subway, bus or cab if you had to. Some plate glass windows in stores are pretty tough, too. A mini maglite is pretty indestructible and offers a great light source. I've carried one with me for years and have used it in a couple of power outages. At one hotel my mini mag was the only light available since the emergency lighting didn't work for whatever reason. But the mini light is better than nothing.

I think I'd add a dust mask or bandana. Something that can cover your face. The events on 911 sure outlined the need for dust protection. If you know the city very well and can navigate off the beaten path that's fine. If not maybe a foldable map of NYC? That will go with your compass.

I agree on the water bottle and multi use where possible.

Enough cash to keep you mobile should power be disrupted and things like ATMs and credit card readers be out of service.

With your list - if you are subjected to a random bag search by the Transit Authority you may be pegged for having burglary tools. If you add some of the things suggested you might have a better chance of "explaining" your carry choices.

In addition to everyone else's comments, I'd add a pair of surgical gloves (for touching icky things/blood, etc) and some raw almonds & walnuts just in case you're stuck somewhere and hungry you can discreatly eat these and take the edge off. Pretty nutritious too. Per Rick's suggestion, a dust mask is indispensible. Add some antibacterial wipes and saline eye drops...I find them useful even when all's well.

Forgot to mention a rain poncho; folds small, doesn't take much space and in a downpour you'll be glad you had it.

David, when I first read your list, it did sound like a tool bag for a burglar to me, except for the whiistle. I'm glad I don't live in a large city.

My get home bag and bug out bag are different and have additional items.

Any way, my first impression was Holy carp a $50 buck pry bar?....you can by them all day long at harbor freight for like $2 bucks....yeah I know that includes all the stuff, not just the pry bar.

EDC when I go to cities (not that often, but sometimes unavoidable) is my zippered money belt (looks like a regular belt but zips open on the back) with some paracord, enough cash for a cab and a hotel room, and a small agate arrowhead (firestarting, blade, etc. but doesn't set off metal detectors), paracord bracelet, paracord bootlaces and coat drawstring, wallet with credit and debit cards plus ID in my inner jacket pocket with a false wallet with some expired prepaid Visa cards and 29 dollars in cash in my outer pocket (in case I am mugged), a Swiss Army knife (Swiss Champ) in a belt sheath, a Leatherman Wave in a belt sheath, a small first aid kit, a cheap $1 poncho and $1 space blanket, my Mp3 player (1 AA battery, 4 mg) with earbud headphones), an altoids tin (with a cheap wire bone saw, 20' of monofil, 4 single hooks, 5 shot sinkers, 2 lure-style cyalume lightsticks, 1 thompson snare, 1 photon-style LED light (blue), 1 fresnel lens magnifier, 5 waterproof matches w/striker patch, 4 fabric knuckle bandages, 1 patch moleskin, 2 cotton balls, 1 qt ziplock bag, 4 Katadyn water purifier tabs, 1 single-sided razor blade, and a button style compass), my zipper-pull which is an analog compass/thermometer w/windchill chart, and my watch which is a Casio Solar Triple Sensor which has compass, thermometer, barometer, altimeter along with various chronograph features. On my keychain is another firesteel and striker, a small eyeglass magnifier lens, a tiny swiss army knife, another photon LED light (white), and a metal pea-less whistle, along with a cat-face style steel punch (the cat ears make a nasty fist weapon and the fingers go into the 'eyes' like brass knuckles). I usually have 3 pens on me, all working, but one is a space pen that can write in any conditions, one is a kubaton-style weapon with a wicked point, and one is a covert knife blade. If I am in my own state, I have a CCW so I carry two 9mm. Generally a Glock or H&K 9mm hi-cap in a shoulder holster, and a smaller 9mm in an ankle holster, with 2 extra mags each. A can of bear spray is usually in my right hand slash pocket, just in case. Hope that helps.
