Smith and Wesson .357

As those who read in one of my other post, I lost my beloved 686 recently on the trap line.

Well it didn't take me long to find a suitable replacement at my local gun store in Eagle River (Boondocks).

About a week after losing my .357 I was in Boondocks and Shawn showed me a nice used 686+1 that had the right amount on the price tag. It followed me home that day.

The new gun shoots straight and is a pleasure to shot however it has one nagging problem. It has a bare steel back strap on the grip.

This exposed steel burns like hell if you grab the gun with bare hands in sub-zero temps.

Well today I was in Boondocks again and Shawn asked how the .357 was working for me. I told him the problem I was having and he suggested I put the grip that they put on the .500 S&W on it. Of course I said I didn't know it would fit. He went to another counter and pulled one out and installed it on my gun for me.

$33 later and its like I have a new gun.

Now that I'm done trapping I've decided to carry this gun while guiding my snow machine trips.

Please ignore my stupidity on the subject. Is a .357 a bear stopper?

nice looking revolver. Losing the other one really sucks. I would be temped to rig up a lanyard of sorts to keep that from happening again.

Hehehe. Not to make light of the situation that he was in, but a lanyard would have been like an anchor tethered to a buoy.

Not only was it deep but it was "FRACKEN" cold.

I did try to recover the lost items but the water was to deep.

By the way, this gun accounted for 2 deer this year. Both shot with HSM 180 grain jacketed hollow point. Both dropped in their track.

I worked at Boondocks back in the 80's when I lived on Fire Lake, in Eagle River (aka Buzzard Gulch). Say Hallo to Don Hanks & Shawn for me.

What you see is the result of the American Public School system.

The CNC guy that programed the machine thought it WAS 6. And he double checked.

"Dummy Cords" have saved many soldiers' careers. I were one.

We prefered to refer to them as "ranger ropes" when I was in custody!

Much more tatical.

We also found that a 2 foot loop of boot lace tied into the rear sling swivel, then to the sholder harness, worked like a "speed slig" before all the one point-two point crap started. That way your dummy cord was no longer a dummy cord, it was a "Ranger Rope" and no one could accuse you of needing a dummy cord!

The thing is, when I dropped the pistol belt I was trying to shed weight so I could swim to shore. The last thing I wanted was having it dragging along behind me and pulling me down.
