Sorry if I am repeating an old post but it is winter and we do need to repeat things from time to time as we do have new people here with new ideas
I have a paper bag in the back of my jeep containing:
a quilt, stainless cooking pot (I think about 1.5L) and lid, toilet paper, Hothands-2 (4 packs, each lasts 10 hours), a dozen or so instant soup mixes (Bear Creek kind, from walmart, mmmmm tasty), choppers (leather mittens with wool mitten inserts), wool hat, and a couple matchbooks.
Then I have a steel rectangular dirt shovel, hatchet, a 5gallon water container, a spare quart of engine oil, a small box of sticks and medium tinder, and sometimes I carry a 5gallon container of petrol if I'm not driving around town.
Okay, my ignorance is going to show here. Don't you have a problem with the water freezing in winter? Don't you take the chance of the container popping from the ice then having a vehicle full of water once the old heater warms it up?
O' right, yes I do have some space in my "carbine" stock for survival stuff. I guess you could look at the buttstock as the "trunk", yea that works good, snickers bars, firestuff, swiss army escape and evassion knife, space blanket, (the little one, the one that does not work). Just kidding, well kind'a. I have two 3-ton come-a-longs, and deadmen (not what you think). 3 lengths of 20' chain (60' total) 3/8's link. One Hi-Lift (handyman) jack. 3- 60 pound bags of sand, the "OME" truck jack, two set's of V-Bar tire chains. And one Skidoo 550 Super wide track snowmachine. One old sleeping bag, Bunny boots, etc., O' Yes and my "CARBINE".:)

OK first off it's gonna take a heck of alot of bad stuff to get the jeep stuck ( I'm an avid off-roader and the warranty is really really voided:D ) I have a wool blanket rolled up and in a stuff bag. 2 liters of water, 10 energy bars, a small bottle of purifier tablets, swiss army knife (the big ugly one that's almost a cube:rolleyes: ) some cordage, change of clothes (evrything down to the undies, all of my vehicle recovery equipment, tools, and my magnesium fire starter. Also there is a jerry can beside the rear tire. Keep in mind it sounds like alot but it all fits behind the rear seat (except the jerry can) and if you own a wrangler you know how small a space that is.

I'll be teaching a class in the near future on this very subject
One of the items I find as a number one is knowledge of where you are going, knowledge on winter survival (vehicles when not running become colder than the temp outside), and knowledge of some of the nearest places to get help (one could walk miles more than necessary for help)
The second item is those little oxygen operated chemical heater pads (I prefer the second size up from the smallest)
These babies will stay warm for 12 hours or so and a number of them in your pockets will keep you from freezing to death in some of the most extreme temps
I like to keep a whole box in the truck, even if I don't have any thing else to help
A box bought when the temps warm up can be purchased for half off some times and isn't that expensive, plus they will keep for absolutely years before used with no loss of energy

For those wanting to store some water in your vehicle, here is a link of a container. I think I'm going to get a couple. I've always been shy about carrying water even though I know how important it is. I just never wanted to have the container burst from freezing and wind up with water in the vehicle.
