New twist on pace counter

First let me say ty to Kevin, the paracordist, for the inspiration. I wanted to make a set but did not want to copy his per say so this is what I came up with.

4 plait braided main line with bead caps tied onto a swelled melted end. I wanted to move them around to different sheaths so I made a prussic as the fastener. Its about the length of a CD case.

If the colors dont match its because I am colorblind:D

Nice job! I am interested in these myself and have been wanting to take a crack at it, but I am not too great when it comes to this kind of stuff.

It's really weird that you posted this because I've been thinking about pace counters all week. Is it something you guys use much? It's sure hard to get lost in Indiana so I can't see them to be of any value. If I lived in AK or the bush of Canada or even some place around the Rockies they might be of benefit. Do you use them?

No Rick I am the Captain now so I no longer drive, but in a few years I will be Chief and will be driving again :)

I do use them for obstacle navigation. The thing is you can set the increments as you need too as long as you know your pace for that increment. When I was in the Army we used 100' but now I use 50'.

In La especially at night and you come to a wetland area or thicket you want to go around I will use the counter and compass to make 90* turns and count the distance. Once I have pasted the area I reverse it to get back on track.

No real need unless you are orienteering or adventure racing to use the counter for distance.

I've got a set of pacing beads that Kevin made. Did a trade for them. When I focus on using them, they are fairly accurate. My problem is that I enjoy paying attention to the flora and fauna (and taking pictures) and sometimes lose "focus" on the beads.

I guess that's my concern as well. With my loss of hearing I use my eyes to compensate and I'm constantly looking at stuff all around me. Sort of head on a swivel kind of thing. Would be hard for me to stay focused, I think.

Rick, you don't need them in the Rockies. That is what mountains are for. You can shoot back azimuths. I would have guessed you needed them in Indiana.

If you walk four miles in any direction I guarantee you'll run into a road. The northern 2/3s of the state is flat enough that you can see forever and the lower 1/3 is up and down hill and dale. I just haven't figured out a need for them. That's why i asked.

I've used them to keep track of how far I'm walking as part of my exercise plan.
