Quality Knives anyone can make

Green Pete made a video where he did a similar build however it involved more equipment and an odd angle bracket the had to moved about. This what I came up with after viewing his production. So honestly Green Pete is the originator and I am the innovator :)

As promised here is the setup I used to make my knives. In the pic you see the only tools needed to make the knives using this system. A grinder and drill press do help but are not needed, however I did use the grinder to shape the handle on the knife with the brown scales. On the Osage Orange knife I forged it to shape then used the setup below to make my bevel and grinds.

What I have done is taken a piece of steel and drilled a hole into it that a rod would slide into. The steel has been tapped between the borads of my workbench. I measured the height needed from the bottom of the hole to the top of the work bench. This set the angle that the file will ride on.

If you want your tapers to come up higher on the blade just lower the steel 1/8th" at a time and make a cut. once you have used it a few times you should know your measurements needed to get the angle you want

The rod in the pic is not the rod I use for making the tapers it is used for the bevels. It is smaller than the hole and allows you to tilt the file at a sharper angle than the tapers to cut the bevels. I use a rod that just fills the hole to cut the tapers. The distance the file travels is limited but the placement of the steel plate and the length of the rod.

If you look closely you will see a piece of broken file with a c- clamp holding it. This is used to make sure the file does not cut past the ricaso and leaves a straight smooth line.

Here are the two knives I made using this system. They are 1095 and I Heat treated and tempered them myself using the forge and toaster oven.

I made the mosaic pins from brass hobby scraps and epoxy. They are on the brown knife only.

Beautiful work EA! It has to be enormously satisfying to take a rough piece of steel and turn it into something useful and aesthetically pleasing.

Great work! That dark brown one just takes my breath away! Makes me want a "shop" area all the more. I don't have anyplace where I can work at this time. BTW, where did you get the steel? :cool2:

It's not that, I just don't have the room. I live in a high rise building in a fairly small apt. smack in the middle of everything. It's a whole 'nother world out here..."notherer" than you ever imagined. It takes getting away once in a while to realize that. Otherwise you get into the Stockholm syndrome.

I dont like to buy stuff unless I must but knife steel is one thing I dont skimp on. I got the steel from Jantz. 1095 carbon steel 1 1/4 wide 18" l strip 3/16th thick.

The brown one is my go to knife and handles all the chores I need. I like big knives just because I do but I dont carry any of them any longer. There is plenty of spine on that one for hammering on if you need to split wood but thats why I have the hatchet :)

It took appox 3 days to finish the knife and that was here and there not constant work. I will build some more of them but I am thinking scandi grind.

The jig does the work and I just push a file.

I dont have any sheaths for it however. Just some cardboard with duc tape :( Never got around to learning how lol

So your saying that you do not have room for a 2 foot by 2 foot board , some c-clamps, a file and a strip of metal? Cause if ya did I might be inclined to make you a blank and pre-drill the holes. The rest is for you to cut then send off to be heat treated. I am sure there are ppl on this forum closer to you that could do that, 1095 is very easy to do.

I build fiber glass longbows too and that is where all the handles come from, left over scraps and I have lots of gorgeous scraps just asking to be used.

I could do a tutorial on sheaths if anyone is interested. The problem with that is that there are a bunch of leather/knife guys here and I am sure that my style is "wrong" to some of them.

There are many ways of doing things and if your way produces the same end result then I would like to see them please! Most knife knife makers use knife grinders or forge the blade to shape. I dont use either but I know that my knives will hold up because the design and heat treatment are proven.

I have seen your sheaths up close. There ain't nothing "wrong" with the way they came out.

We all do things a little differently. Seeing how somebody else does it often makes the light bulb go off (at least for me) and helps to improve the process.

So, heck yeah! Teach away.

After musing on it I think I could build a model of the jig that would be mountable, adjustable and benefit ppl with small work areas. They would just need the edge of a table to clamp it.

I'd be interested in that, also learning about how you "heat-treat" the knives. :cool2:
