I'm curious to hear what you experts think make the best camp shoes. By this, I mean the shoes you wear around camp, once you've taken off your boots for the day.
Currently I'm using a pair of generic "Crocs," because they're lightweight, comfortable, and impossible to soak. But I feel like there is probably something better out there that I'm overlooking. The one thing I don't like about them, is that they do not compact at all, for packing purposes.
Your thoughts?
I just use a cheap pair of flip flop sandles.
I generally don't kick off my boots until it's time to retire.

We used to bring those socks with soles stitched on them when I was a kid. Last time I was camping it was a cheap old pair of hard-soled bedroom slippers.
slipper style bean boot. It's good for running out for more wood or the out house, or down to the river for water

Anymore, I usually just bring a pair of sandals for extra footwear. I used to windsurf a lot and wore Okespor Water Shoes, and found that these were great for hikes where I was going through water. http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/11359.htm
If it's cold I wear Uggs calf high in warmer weather unlined moccasins.
The PF Flyers "Grounder Lo Sneaker" I've found to be a good camp shoe as well as a light shoe to carry for river crossing. It's a canvas sneaker with rubber cleats. It's also available as a woman's shoe.

a cheap pair of house slippers that are designed more for the outdoors for running to the bathroom and such, otherwise barefoot or socks.
I generally hike in trail runners and don't need a camp shoe. But, I know people that use crocs, or sandals, or water shoes. Anyways, crocs are a good choice. You can just strap them on the outside, or stuff them with something to put on the inside.
Whatever you choose, it's a good idea if it floats. It's a bit easier to retrieve if it comes off in the water unless it's a fast moving stream. I had to chase down a Croc in a stream once. Glad there weren't any cameras around.

I personally don't care for sandals, it's to easy to injure your feet. I don't like the gravel getting between the sandler and my feet either. I own a few pairs of Teva's and Chaco's, there fine for walking around the park. I've never thought about using Croc's, but I wouldn't think they would make very good river crossing shoes.
I also own many pair of water shoes, the ones I like the best incorporate neoprene in the uppers. This makes a great river shoe but they smother your feet worse than a hiking boot.
You're right on the pebbles. Same with sand, too.
