A Cowboy's work is never done!

Would you beleive it I came home from working in the factory today...up at 3:45 am Home from my daughter's summer camp at 6, to find out I have 2 new horses. Yeah you got it 2 of them! First thing I do when I arrive home is water horses and hose them down it is unbearably hot right now 130 in the factory today. I hear a horse cough as I am placing the hose in the trough. Wait a minute my horse never coughs..... I look up to find these girls in my other pasture.....

I first got them water! Then called the police...what a hokus pokus that was!

I have located the owner which hasn't reported them missing or come and got them despite a call to the home! I have no idea where this is going! Seems they were astray in the road and placed in my pasture by law enforcement and are now my problem! WOW! speechless~!

Be careful, Cowboy. Ask Dogman what can happen when you take in abused animals. Take care of 'em if you want to (as if you wouldn't do that anyway :innocent:) but don't get too attached. http://www.wilderness-survival.net/f...ead.php?t=3203

PS, Send the police a bill for boarding the horses for them ! (they put them there ;))

Cowboy if you'll allow it I'd like to help you feed those guys. I can't believe folks would let a horse get that bad off. I can't help them all but I can offer to help you with these.

I agree Ken! I don't like this one bit! I wanna save them but know this isn't gonna be pretty. I have a validated by good word of an omish couple who the owner is. I have contacted authorities from the word go. I'd like to be able to rescue them but...I have no issue filing charges either. I searched out and contacted the owner in hopes of being able to save the animals...part of me says it ain't gonna happen and it will get ugly. One thing though we have no choice when these things come into our lives but to deal with it! I'll be doing the best I can!

There is a trend right now where people figure they can no longer afford them and turn them out. But having took a ride to all the prominent horse peoples barns this afternoon, I found this is a regular occurence for these people. All were aware of them and their horses. One thing is for sure...I'll make sure they no longer have horses!

What Horses ? Those are YOUR horses , and I will swear to it ! ;)

Breaks my heart to see this and have them in my pasture. I am speechless. I'll do what I can and if I need help I'll ask...not very good at that but I will. This is something I never planned for!

Actually, I think you should contact the nearest ASPCA and file a report. That will protect your tush from someone accusing you of abusing the animals. I'd also talk to them about retaining the horses to nurse them back to health. Keep all receipts for any expenses you incur. If the owners try to pull anything on you then you should be able to take them to small claims court for reimbursement. I'd also send a certified letter to them advising them to come get their horses. That way you're covered all around.

No horse should ever look like that. I wonder what the owner would do if he had to miss a few meals.

Maybe the owner will give you the horses if you threaten to have them arrested for cruelty,

I'll pitch for the wormer and we'll just say it was from a Handsome Dream.

Good advice Rick! I think I will follow it!

At a minimum, I'd start a record of expenses.

As a guy who grew up with horses, they look pitiful. I'd be happy to pitch-in some $.

From the pics, all I see are weeds. Any chance of cutting that and sowing some grass?

I hope you have a place they can get under to stay out of the sun and rain.

That really pi$$e$ me off,and I see horses like this almost on a weekly basis at one auction I go to about 25-30 miles south of Indianapolis,they either don't bring a bid,or go for between $15 and $25 dollars.

It is pathetic and criminal that people allow their animals to get in this condition yet no one does a darn this about it.My former neighbor was one of those people ,took 2 years of him turning them loose on the neighborhood when the feed ran out in the middle of the month,and one very emaciated horse stumbling onto my pasture then having to be put down,before anything was done to them.


Be very careful when you feed them CB,give them very small amounts to start with,as their stomach is no longer used to food,and it can have adverse effects on them.

It's sad to see animals in that condition! Sorry you have to deal with this crap CS...I guess you should look at it as a complement though. He must have decided, by looking at your horses that you can nurse these two back to health.

Around here lots of cats get turned out. Don't know what I'll do when they start turning out horses.

I am not a horse person, so you guys will have to explain for me. I am guessing that the horses were left in their pen until they were half starved, and then let out. I would guess that a horse wandering around the neighborhood would be able to find it's own food. Is this right, or is there something I don't know?

Like others said document everything, file necessary reports, and protect yourself. I seem to be in a rut of no good deed goes unpunished lately, I really need to hear a good resolution to Good Deeds.

Well I called animal control this am. They refused to come get the animals, they agreed to try and determine the owner. So I called the SPCA, they refused to accept a complaint or do anything without the owners name. I just came home for lunch to find them gone. No note or phonecall or anything. I specifically stated to animal control and the SPCA that noone was to enter my property without me present and left my number. I also left my number and the request with the barn that thought they knew the owner. I will attempt to find the horses when I get off of work and file a complaint to the SPCA! Something seemed funny about the SPCA call so I'll be calling other than the local branch. We have what is called a good ole' boy system...here:innocent: Somebody knew more than they let on!

Rick, how about a search for a better SPCA contact...please sir?
