The Indiana DNR has confirmed that at least one mountain lion resides in Brown County in Southern Indiana. Since that portion of the state is bordered on two sides by the Ohio River and the Wabash River and farmland to the north I'm leaning toward a formerly captive cat ... but ...

almost looks too healthy/Fat to be wild, we have them here and I have seen a few,, They are thinner by far,, and kinda ragged looking, there is plenty of food for them here so I suspect they have parasites,, the one pictured in the photo looks well taken care of, IMO
There is so much food available in that part of Indiana. Deer are so plentiful as are any number of other mammals including dogs and cats I would imagine. A deer carcass partially covered with leaves had been found so DNR set out a camera near the carcass and got a picture the same week-end. This is the very area where I spent most of my time in the woods and there's a LOT of woods in that part of the state. Deam Wilderness alone is 17,000 acres of primitive forest. Gives me a new found respect the next time I venture out there. I just hope no one goes out lion hunting.

There are occasional sightings of panthers here on the Delmarva Peninsula and even black bear. About half of the sightings are taken seriously and about 5% of those are confirmed.
I can provide 2 confirmed sightings in SC. I saw one several yrs. ago... told my freinds and they cried BS. I said fine and never brought it up again.. A few yrs. back my duck huntin' buddy was awaiting me and first light to start shooting....I got to the place and he was as white as a ghost....sayin' something about a big cat... I said BS are we goin' duck huntin' or do you need to go home?
The only big cat over here is dead to the world asleep next to me:blushing:
Although there is the fabled Beast of Bodmin Moor and other big cat sightings.

To survive animals move away from people and toward food. We have an ideal situation in the Appalachian chain, abundance of food, wilderness and a drop in hunting deep woods. You can harvest deer, turkey etc in your back yard. I have personally with the game warden counted over 60 turkey from my back deck, had deer bed down in the flower beds, 3 average size bear in the yard. I keep a 30-30 by the kitchen door for coyotes and have caught and thrown more black snakes out of the yard than I can count. My "attack" beagle will snooze on the deck and doesn't bother to bark at turkey, deer or small game parading by. Don't know if you folks know it or not but a strand of monofilament around the edge of the woods will work to keep deer out of the garden. They bump it in the dark, can't understand it and turn away.

Funny thing is he claims that ever since he saw the "mountain lion" he hasn't had an issue with a pack of wild dogs that were in the area. I keep telling him they probably ate each other or moved on, but he thinks something picked them off.

Based on the number of reports on this poor cat I'm glad they finally put it down. The poor thing was getting hit by cars in darn near every state in the Union. Probably bad eyesight.
