do you know how much you have?
this goes with my thread "how much is enough" i was thinking as people said how much food they have, how do you know that you have 3 months worth of food?
i mean have you measured it? i did tonight, i took a 450gram bag of black beans and measured how many cups were in it and found 2.5 cups of dry beans, now each 1 cups of beans yeilds 3 cups of cooked beans
then i took 2 cups of rice(will measure how many cups in a 15lb bag soon) and made dinner plus 1 pork belly also used 2 cups of white corn meal and also 2.75 cup of wheat bran for muffins
so summarized
1 cup of beans
2 cups of rice
2 cups corn meal
2.75 cups of whaet bran
2 green tea bags
there is pretty much breakfast ,lunch and dinner, not very exciting but i can calculate 3 months worth of food for this meal alone then add my other six meals per feeding as i said before 7breakys, 7 lunches, 7 dinners and 7 snacks multiply by 90 or 180 or 365 days
get it/
good now go measure how many bowls of cereal per box or what have you and let me know
Do I Know How Much I Have........??????

This is why I'm into dehydrating now
Commercially prepared stuff is too expensive, and you need to make things as compact as possible or the house gets overrun.
I purchased a good dehydrator and a can seamer. I buy empty cans with lids (I use #2.5 cans, about the size of the large tomato cans, 28 oz). I wanted to go with cans because they are pretty vermin proof.
Just yesterday I dehydrated 8 one pound bags of frozen sliced carrots, which I got on sale for 79 cents a bag, and all 8 lbs. fit into ONE #2.5 can. I slip in an oxygen absorber, seal the can, and it's good for 20 years.
What's my point here as it relates to this thread? Inventory is easier this way. I know the amount of rice, carrots, pinto beans or whatever that fits in a #2.5 can and I label them accordingly.
One #2.5 can holds 3 one pound bags of frozen cut green beans once they are dried. A pound of green beans (rehydrated) is about 4 good servings, or 12 servings per can. If I look on my shelf and I have 12 cans of dried green beans, I have 144 servings of green beans.
This is my system and I'm stickin' to it
