From scratch. I like the stuff from a box too, but it's so expensive over here, I can't justify buying it, when it's so easy to make.

I haven't bought the pre-packed mac and cheese in many years, but as a young sailor on a very tight budget it was a diet staple. Not sure what the cost is now, but we used to get it either on sale or at the Commissary (Navy grocery store) for around ten cents a box. Yep....ate a lot of mac and cheese back then.
On a side note - if you have a roomate that drinks while he works in the kitchen and he "forgets" to drain the water, you will end up with mac and cheese soup.
Also as a side note, I checked the price of packet Macaroni Cheese (Kraft) and it was £2.45, which is $4.00 or thereabouts for a two portion packet. My homemade was yummy!
Wow, that's nuts! Here, you can sometimes get a three pack of the blue box stuff for around a buck.
OTOH, I paid about $5 for a pack of Hob Nobs, so fair is fair, I suppose. ;)
We'll have to start sending each other seige parcels!

Had some leftover risotto, and some of that whole grain / brown rice stuff. So I mixed them together, added an egg, and some bread crumbs, formed it in to patties, and coated them in panko. Fried them in some hot peanut oil:

This is an old and simple recipe, but makes the finest tasting potato cakes.
3-medium potatoes
2-eggs
1/8 tsp Baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1 Tbl milk
1 Tbl Flour
Beat eggs well and then add baking powder, salt, pepper, and milk. Set aside.
Peel and rinse potatoes, then grade and squeeze water out. Add to egg mixture and stir.
Dust mixture with flour and stir.
Heat a skillet to medium high and add 2 tablespoons of butter or margarine.
Use enough potato mixture to make two cakes four inches in diameter and 1/4 inch thick.
Brown first side then turn over. Brown second side and remove to plate. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and serve.
I wonder if the shipping would be less than the price difference? Hmm...

I've got a pot of soup, on the stove. It's basically Kens recipe for menistro....minastru.....veggy beef. I change it a little, everytime I make it, depending on what I have in the fridge and pantry.:innocent:
Dear wifey is making SOS (Sh** on a shingle). The white gravy type with ground beef,ground sausage and onions. To be served on toast with an egg on top. I know there are approximately 1 million variations , but I can safely say I never met an SOS reciepe that I did not like. Very unhealthy, but a good winter meal in my book. Then she is off to bingo, and nap time on the couch for me :)
My, the dog, a hot fire, a full belly and a nap. Yeah, hard to beat that.
Please don't talk about food. I'm still way too stuffed from lunch, which was actually breakfast, at 12:30 this afternoon. We have a small family run chain here that has "New England's Largest Breakfast and Lunch Menu" All Day. :drool:

A side of grilled cornbread, and
A side of homefries (very well done) and
A side of biscuits and gravy (Southern Style) and
A side of fish cakes and
Dessert - 2 apple crepes with honey and cinnamon.
I washed it all down with a few cups of strong coffee. AND I WAS A MEMBER OF THE "CLEAN PLATE CLUB"!

Try frying chicken wings with no flour. Just use a spice rub of your choice before frying! YUMMY!
I made meatloaf, mashed potatoes, green beans and a hoecake. Wasnt a bite left! comfort food!
We don't do fried foods very often. The pork tenderloins last week and tonight were pretty unusual. But I put together some beer battered cod and homemade hash brown patties with pickled beets on the side. We topped that off with a loaf of pumpernickel bread.

Had that for supper tonight cooked out there and just for yucks, since I had it going, I cut up a chicken after supper and cooked that too!
You have to be a hearty soul to dig a path to the grill and then USE IT! Cudos.
Nah, just really desperate for grilled steak!
