Telescoping Baton

What size do you want? Here are the two that I have.

21" I think. From the looks of the handles, those may be Schrades.

i found one back in 99 in a phoenix thrift store. it was in the bin of objects they couldn't identify; $1 each.

well i took it to the checkout and they still didn't realize it was worth about $60. the lady rung it up and i departed. best deal i've ever found.

a couple weeks later i was jumped and it saved my life.

Which now makes it worth $1.98? Nah, You're worth a whole lot more to us than that. (wink).

I was a baton instructor for the department of corrections but I have never used a telescoping baton and cannot really give any opinion on them. However certain principles apply when using any stick or baton type weapon. I agree the throat is a very effective target, however it can be a lethal strike and therefore it was not considered a primary target unless you were in a life-threatening situation. The collarbones and the shins are very effective strike points and it was rare that I have seen anyone continue fighting after receiving a solid strike there, though in one case I saw a guard break a baton over a convicts shinbone and the guy never even slowed down, but this guy was a serious mental case. A baton is really just an extension of your arm, so any type of punch, whether is is a jab, hook, uppercut or whatever will work even more effectively with a baton. What many people do not realize is that batons are also very effective grappling and restraint tools when used properly. Basically if you can fight without a stick then you can fight with one, but many jurisdictions do require a training course before carrying baton legally, which makes sense, and of course some places they are just plain illegal.

I have a grey-handled ASP (I believe it was an "economy" model) that measures 20" extended that I carried back when I was working security to put myself through college. It is now sitting in the back of one of my desk drawers at work. I figure if I can't carry a firearm at work, I might as well have some means of protecting myself.

and we're darned proud of it.


on the other hand, i'm not the one who sounds like i'm waiting for the excuse to go all Taxi Driver on some criminals. :D

Never used one before. My son is Military Police and loves the one he totes regularly. My experience was with the PR-24. Lot of techniques besides cracking skull. Takedowns, etc. I have seen them in a telescoping version and would probably lean that direction.

I've carried some of the cheaper batons and was not impressed. I have bent them during training. I've had my ASP for about 10 years and haven't bent it yet. Training or otherwise.

One way to tell if you have a quality baton is to hit your car tire with a very heavy blow. If it bends throw it away and buy a more expensive baton.

....and if it bounces back and cracks you in the nose, work on your technique.
