When my friends and I started smoking (ok, they smoke, I just show up with some potato salad), there were plenty of flies drawn to the smoke/smell. Is this something you deal with as well? If so, can you do anything to eliminate them?
I've never had that problem. Are these generally day time or night time events? Does your friend have an electric bug zapper near the smoking area? I suppose it's possible for the flies to be attracted to the smoker but it's also possible something else is attracting them. The heat inside the smoker should prevent them from entering but I can see how annoying they would be if you are trying to set up and eat outside.
The smoke from your smoker should not act as an attractant to flies. Check the surrounding area - any of the bowls, bags, utensiles used to handle the meat/marinade lying around? Party around the smoker - people, beer, other food? These could be attractants as well.
I have two neighbors that call me or email me when I start smoking things. Both have wives that keep them on short leashes and have taken away their will to do "man things".
They only whimper and drool. Pretty funny at times, but sad at the same time.
I did have another neighbor a few years ago that would come over and just raise the lid on my pit and help himself to touch my food and lick his fingers. The third time it happened I asked him where in the f*(k he got the idea it was o.k. to come over and do that without asking. He's never been back since.
Are people just that stupid? I have a lot of tools and I don't mind loaning them to neighbors IF they use them with some intelligence and return them in the same condition they were loaned. I have one neighbor (a mooch) that wanted to borrow some gas. I offered to lend him my wheel barrow instead. I told him I thought he needed something to haul a pair that big.Quote:

I'm the same way with my tools. Someone can borrow anything tool I have as long as they bring it back the same or better and I have no problem making someone replace it if they mess it up. That's only happened once and ironically it was the fool who came and licked my damn bbq with out asking. Fortunately they are long gone.
Not so worried about them contaminating the meat (it's hot and the lid is closed), it's more about the annoyance factor. Probably what the others mentioned about having other food around. Toss it up to coincidence.
About borrowing things: I borrowed my neighbor's backpack gas blower. When I returned it, there was a crack in plastic part of the backpack. I didn't do it- didn't drop it, or tighten it too much, but to assure him I wasn't that guy, offered to pay to replace it. Now, when/if I borrow things, I check their condition. Kind of like renting a car- don't want to get dinged for the last renter's dings.
It can make for problems very quickly like what you sited. I have a couple of neighbors that are pretty good and we trade tools around. I always clean and oil (if appropriate) when I return and do it as soon as I'm finished using it.
Neighbor 1. needed to cut some decent sized limbs out of his tree and borrowed neighbor's 2 chain saw. Neighbor 2 left for the week-end. Saturday morning I hear the chain saw running and look outside. Neighbor 1's yard is full of smoke. I mean covered. Looked like a fog bank. I mosey out to see what the problem is and smell it right away.
"Uh, gotta a bit of smoke going there on the chain saw."
"Yea, something must be wrong with it."
"Just out of curiosity, did you mix oil with the gas?"
"Oh, yea. I know what I'm doing."
"Don't question that at all. What kind of oil did you use?"
"Pennzoil 10W-30."
"Here's your sign."
Rick, I gave my one neighbor a piece of that chicken I cooked Sunday on the new pit and he said right on the spot he wants a pit just like that. My son brought me another barrel last night and I'll be making one for him today.
Let me get this straight. You and I have been talking about smoking meat and about that new smoker. So, you're making you neighbor a smoker and I didn't even get a taste of the chicken. I think I understand where I rate now.
I'm trying to give you an incentive to make one. That way I can save on postage and shipping of said chicken.
Right. Sure. No need to try and appease me at this point. I can take a hint.
