Patterning shotgun

Does anyone want to volunteer to come hold this drill for a while?

This is wearing my @$$ out!

I provide the beer and after two hours you get a shot of Evan Williams. (you're going to need it)

The only restriction is that no one need apply that has ever used the term "shottie"!


I am using a carbide cylinder hone and cutting oil and after about two hours I have taken the bore from .730" to .738 which is only .004" from each wall.

The walls on the Mossberg barrel are .065" thick as compared to the barrels on one of my double barrel guns, which are .027", so I have plenty of thickness to work with.

When I get to .740 at the jug portion I will do another test fire. At the rate I am going that will be Thursday after Christmas!

If I still drank beer I would take you up on it. Thankfully I don't drank much these days.

Curious though, if one shoots a shottie, are they considered a shottist?

So can I come by and just drink beer? I'm almost certain I could do that.

I read that someone after similar results only removed .002" for a total of .004". Maybe, consider a test fire where you are? This person seemed happy with results, however I have no experience and no data was actually used to substantiate what I read.

After several hours of honing, and the wearing out of two sets of stones on the hone and development of severe tennis elbow I am calling BS on the guy that claims he used sandpaper!

I have now gone from .730 in the bore to an expansion chamber that is 3" long and .740. It may not do anything but it sure is a nice pretty well polished section shining like a mirror in there.

We will now return to the pattern boards and see if any improvement is evident with this small change.

With 5 different barrels that need attention, now that I am educated as to the pitiful performance I can expect from them as all around shooters, I have bitten the proverbial bullet and ordered an expansion reamer, hoping that a true cutting tool will speed up this process slightly and allow me to achieve some measure of real metal removal during my present lifetime.

They say what you don't know will not hurt you, but I am now considering the possibility that some of those escaped critters, and clay pigeons that drifted slowly and embarrassingly to the ground in untouched condition really were not my fault after all!
