About this question is that it, like many questions and discussions on our forum, seems to pre-suppose a TSHTF scenario. It seems to me that most people answered in the negative, so if society has collapsed, are we looking at it someday being restructured by people who will eventually come crawling out of their little shelters having managed to survive and will only have their own interests at heart? Sounds like it wouldn't take long before we have a new society just like the one we have now.

We've almost perfected the art of looking out for number one. It'd be such a shame to have to start over with some other format we're so unfamiliar with.
Absolutely, since no one would know how and anyone that did know how wouldn't be willling to share their knowledge.
I've been thinking about that quite a bit lately...taking care of number one. For me it is very important. In order for me to take care of the most important person in my life (TDW) I have to be able to take care of myself. That's why I learn, prepare and practice.
Yeah, Crashdive, I know just how that works. My wife and I hit a class 4 on a river in Virginia (I think). Anyone, ole number 1 goes azz first out of the raft and the rapids take me straight to the bottom where I bounce along for what seemed like 3 or 4 hours (probably 15 or 20 seconds). I finally bobbed to the surface someplace down stream and the raft picked me up again. Only later did I learn that one of the guys was going in after me but TDW grabbed him by the preserver and pulled him back. "We need you here!" she told him. It's so nice to be loved.
I guess that reciprocity in concealed carry laws isn't the only thing we should pay attention to.
I have to go with my gut about most things, I might offer a stranger shelter and food if they did not make me uneasy. I live in a house with a big shed out back. It has a wood stove and the door latches, if they needed a roof and a hot meal that would be the offer, next day either they prove useful, or move on. I don't have family so I risk myself and not a wife and kids. That makes taking a chance easier. If I still had my wife and kids I most likely would give them some food and point at the road.
Ditto what Ol WV Coot said. Nope, No way, Not even, Never. Everytime the news talks about somone who killed someone else and they interview the neighbors of the killer, all that is ever said is "He was such a quiet nice man, I can't believe he would do something like this". Nope, No way, No even, Never.

I laid out the hospitality mat a couple times. Didn't turn out so good. They both dug in deeper than a tick. Slobs that expected to be taken care of. After two weeks I asked what thier intentions were and that I needed the space. You would have thought I slapped them in the face. The first guy started bringing friends to sleep over. Later, I found out he was into porn on my computer. Luckily not kiddie porn or, that might have been looked at as mine since it was my computer. Be careful.
