Here is my native NH gold. There are abandoned mines in my area and some natural placers. I wrote this article showing how it is done.
BTW, once you find real gold you will never mistake anything else for it. Only newbies would ever think iron pyrite was the real deal.
I love rock hounding. Don’t know why…maybe it just gives me an excuse to play in the mud :D. There’s not much in my area to rock hound except fossils which I have a small collection of. Would like to try gold panning net time I’m in an area where gold is found.

Owl_girl, there just aren't many places that don't have placer gold for panning. I'm not certain where you are but you should be able to Google Gold Prospecting Clubs for your area. You can often gain a lot of information from their web sites. Many state/federal parks allow panning by permit. Many ban it all together. Most outlaw any kind of digging, dredging or sluicing.
I live in southeast MN. I’m pretty sure there’s no gold here.
Yeah, panning and sluicing, my point was there's a lot more to prospecting and exploration than those things and I've seen people who are a lot more qualified than "newbies" get pretty excited over that mistake and others.
