Wax Myrtle is supposed to keep the skeeters off. I didn't think it worked for me as well as deet though. Course, I just rubbed the leaves on me. I guess I might have better success if I grind them up better to break the oils free.

Not sure of the proper name but a common yard weed called plantin when crushed and maade into a pulp can be rubbed on the skin and it will ward off some bugs. It is also good to take the itch out of bug bites and for helping to de-itch poison ivy as well.
it's also edible.
SJJ - I'm a believer in DEET as well. However, studies suggest that there really isn't much benefit to any concentration over 50%. As I understand it, the higher the concentration the longer it's effectiveness. Rather than just being stronger it lasts longer. Here's a link to some information along those lines. It's from the CDC.
"In general, higher concentrations of active ingredient provide longer duration of protection, regardless of the active ingredient, although concentrations above ~50% do not offer a marked increase in protection time. Products with <10% active ingredient may offer only limited protection, often from 1-2 hours. Products that offer sustained release or controlled release (micro-encapsulated) formulations, even with lower active ingredient concentrations, may provide longer protection times. Regardless of what product you use, if you start to get mosquito bites reapply the repellent according to the label instructions or remove yourself from the area with biting insects if possible."

it's exposure safety studies where done for 10% solutions from what i've read anyway. i figure any situation 10% deet or 5% permethrin on the clothing won't help, you need a mosquito net suit.
now the fancy thing about any insect repellent that doesn't last all day is that you can always put more on.
I use a Bugtamer jacket. Thermacell. Fire and Smoke.
I just show em my business card.
I'm a pretty firm believer in if it ain't broke don't fix it but having as much information as possible is seldom a bad thing.

I don't use any bug repellant. The harms far outweight the benefit.
Silk weight long underwear will prevent bites through clothing. The mosquitos probicus can only bend one way and by have a double layer they are unalbe to penetrate.
I was watchin some vids the other day and Dave Canterbury said yarrow works. He made a concoction by adding it to olive oil, I believe, and stated the military did a study and said it worked as good or better than DEET.
I used to use this home made stuff bought in a small corner store in Eastern Ontario.
Had lemon grass, coconut oils and so on. Best stuff I ever used until somebody pointed out it was like candy coating for a bear.
