after giving this some thought, i think i would stay in the circumpolar region, so all you kids out there thats the top part of the globe, look all around at it, alaska, canada, finland, russia. not allot of people, lots of water and boreal forest and even if the military was doing recon over the air they sure wouldn't be worried about one small cabin way up in the middle of nowhere, short growing season tho and long winters, but i do like a challenge
Oh sure, nest thing you know and everybody's gonna be moving in. Sheesh. What a way to keep a secret.
crash there is a big differenc between wanting to do something and haveing the ability to do something, if people start moving up there all they would be doing is keeping me well equiped
"Is this the Circumpolar Region?"
"It better be. My flippers are killing me."
"Who's idea was this anyway and where did all those people come from?"
"Wingy read about on Wilderness-Survival.net."
"Yeah, him and 10 million others!"

i would have to stay and fight or die fighting, our bit of land has been in our family 6 generations and as soon as I could I would hook up with other American/Rebel fighters.
In most cases you will have warning about what was hitting the fan ie war, build ups troop movements, ever present media. This is the type that scares me cause then a bunch of idiots will buy books and become "self-sufficent" (Ya right) run to the woods and build shelters sapping the local wildlife. A terrorist attack or major natural disaster you got at most a few days to a few seconds (whats that in the rear view mirror). This type causes the most panic and most casulties because no one is ready (Save the smart few) to survive long periods with out internet, electricty, food, ect.
I have always believed it wasn't reasonable that anyone would attack the U.S. No country would be that dumb given the ability we have to defend ourselves and to inflict counter-attack. However, given the state of affairs in Mexico, I'm beginning to believe more and more that the drug cartels could be capable of border skirmishes. Their equipment is getting pretty sophisticated and pretty scary.

An attack on US soil I agree, but the effects of a far off war still may contaminate the US as radio active fallout, biological or chemical agents. Plus the effects it has on our interests ouside the US
I guess it depends on where you are in the U.S. but any of those scenarios would have to be a massive conflagration to seriously impact the U.S. given our location and the prevailing winds. I grew up in the 50's and 60's when atomic bomb tests were crackin' every other week-end (seems like). In the desert west, in the Pacific, in the USSR. The impact was pretty negligible here in the U.S. I know the kilotons have increased dramatically but think about the total kilotons tested. It was massive.
As for biological or chemical, the prevailing winds "should" disperse any agents to a large extent making anything that reaches us (theoretically) manageable. That probably comes as no consolation to those on the west coast, Hawaii or Alaska where the effects would be most harshly felt.
Obviously, open to debate.
That is my point either its in your face right now earthquake tsunami ect or you have ample time to prepare. the problem is then everyone is suddenly trying to gather what they think they need and some read a book and become experts. The few experts or the prepared (People on this forum) suddenly become very popular and not in a good way
You only have to look at store shelves at the slightest hint of a problem to see that. I agree.
I disagree. I know the US Military and the CIA have Al Queda pretty much hog tied when it comes to attacks in the US (not that it CAN'T happen...) you'd have no time to react if a sleeper cell or a new cell managed to set off a NBC weapon in the united states. I could care less about nuclear, honestly. If the initial blast doesn't get you the contamination and not being able to find decent food and water would probably eventually get you. The biological and chemical are the major worries.Quote:

Have you ever seen the effects of a blister agent attack? Mustard Gas is the least of your worries when it comes to those, and the biological attacks are even scarier. And if you think it can't happen on US soil...
If that thing goes off airborne in a city or building you are in you are SCREWED unless you can get to your protective mask NOW. It's not even like carrying an atropine injector would help you. Those things are only designed to push the toxin (and all your blood) out through the pores of your skin, but to give you enough of an endorphin/adrenaline rush to keep fighting for another 10 minutes or so so you can accomplish the mission. All the while the blister agent is melting your eyeballs out of your head.
I mean, sure, if they are sending an armada or a ****load of troops via plane, bus, or boat, yeah, we are gonna know about it, and the military is going to intervene, etc.
Are ANY of our enemys REALLY that stupid?
I already bugged out to Thailand but if you read the news you will see this place has its own problems right now. If things got real bad I am near the Golden Triangle which is the border of Thailand, Laos and Burma. Then there is always Cambodia. However I work here so I guess moving here isn't really bugging out, just moving.
What you said is all true, AS. However, I doubt anyone is going to bug out to another country because of a localized event. You could, I suppose but no one did when the Towers went down. At least none that I know of. I think you are talking about a very major, large scale event to cause people to actually want to leave the country. On that regard, I don't think it's a real threat. But as I said, it's certainly open to debate.
I'm an American because my ancestors bugged out to a new country. The prospects were better here than where they were. Social, economic, political, whatever the reason. There was something here they deamed better than what they had. If I find myself in a similar circumstance I would consider relocating for the benifit of my children.
There must have been a wire crossed somewhere. I wasn't actually talking about bugging out to another country, but pointing out that there are things other than a natural disaster that can happen instantaneously where you don't have time to prepare. Most of the chemical/biological attacks are only going to be a temporary thing until the NBC units can come in and scrub the area and neutralize the agent. Then there should be no issues returning to your home, if you so choose. A lot of times people that make it through things like that choose not to, like the Katrina victims. And I was thinking from as small a scale as gas through the ventilation system of a public building to someone setting off a blast that was the catalyst for an airborned NBC attack, but even that is only going to be city wide at best, unless they contaminate the water or co-ordinate efforts across many major cities.
My apologies for allowing myself to drift so far off topic...
stupid, stupid, stupid question...and then, there was a resounding....YES!Quote:

Exactly. It doesn't take a nuclear plant melt down or terrorist attack for people to bug out. A major drought or bursted dam can have people searching for greener pastures. I know a couple of families that moved to Mexico when their factory moved down there. They felt they had no choice. 15+ years with the same job right out of school with no other training in another field. Stay in the States= start over during an era of massive unemployment. Bug out to Mexico= setting up assembly lines and training others in a field they had experience in.
The (un)intresting guestion here is, that is it bugging out if you just migrate through legal chanels...
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/bug+out
Main Entry: bug out
Function: intransitive verb
Etymology: origin unknown
Date: 1950
1: to retreat during a military action ; especially : to flee in panic
2: to depart especially in a hurry
IMO if I have to leave where I am because it's no longer safe, capable of supporting my family, any other reason- I'm "bugging out". No matter where I end up. Whether it's hill top in Colorado or a hill top in Peru.
This might get intresting If I would first translate bugging out in finnish, find the exact meaning and then translate that back to english... Might even be different! Oh well, OFF TOPIC! (yelled at myself...)
While they may be our enemies, underestimating their capacity for planning/action was what allowed 9/11 to happen. I don't think anyone is stupid enough to do a frontal assault on the US on our own soil. Clandestine guerrilla attacks are the only thing that will work, really, and everyone contemplating attacking the US would see that first off.
I just tried a free internet dictionary to see what would be exact translation for bug out. The result was "tynty pst" which means "to thrust out form the inside of a head" I suppose the thing didn't work properly...
:) Sometimes "American" does not translate into english very well
Hmmm. I guess you all are right. I am probably putting too much thought into this. The exodus to Kanukville was a great example. I guess it all depends on what the individual sees as "threatening" as to whether they would book out to another country. For me, it would take a hell of a lot for me to leave the good ole US of A. But then I'm just too stumborn and hard headed for my own good sometimes.
Both of my parents were immagrants to the United States. My dad "bugged out" to get here. He grew up in Germany, was Jewish, had just been kicked out of college as Hitler passed a decree that no Jews could go to school. He came here in the late 30's. My mom, on the other hand moved here from Nova Scotia for job opportunities.
