so last night i'm tending the fire and the wife says since our conversation that all she can think about is 2012 motivates her a little more to lrearn things i told her a little fear is always healthy riding a bull fear meant respect cage fighting fear always meant respect only guy i didn't fear ended my career, i told her as long as i does not become an obsession( kind of like me and this forum) oh yeah reminds me of a thread i want to start..

Yeah, AP, it is. But for the Grace of God go I. You know. There are a LOT of disabled veterans that participate in the Special Olympics. Head injuries or wounds, congenital birth problems, disease, drug use, all contribute to a diminished mental capacity. And they are neither morons nor retarded.
et al. - Take some time and educate yourself about special needs individuals and you will open the door to some very astounding folks. Here is a link to the Special Olympics website. Think you could do what some of the folks pictured are doing?

I spent many years as a volunteer at the Special Olympics. I met some of the most amazing people. I think we could all learn alot from many of them. They truely were special to me in my life.

I just think those of us that are blessed with good health should consider ourselves most fortunate and "smart" enough not to belittle those that have no control over the hand they drew in life. See? That's what happens. There are a LOT of folks on here that have a special needs child or sibling. They have so much to go through with the stares, embarrassment, anger, resentment, remorse for having those feels even though they are completely normal, and all the daily trials and tribulations. Then someone comes along and makes a joke. It's just one joke but for them it's one more joke in a lifetime of jokes. And that has to get old real quick. My hat's off to you Frank. They say God chooses special parents to have special children. I hope that's true. I also hope that folks reading through this post will be enlightened, even if a little, recognize the good fortune they are blessed with, and understand how hurtful "one more joke" can be.

I've worked with the Developmentally Disabled, For almost a year I took care of two guys in their home who were quadrapalegic and I had to help them with everything: Toilet, bathing, dressing; you name it. I also worked at a workshop for others with varied disabilities as a job coach and many of them are now on the Special Olympics bowling and basketball teams that I sometimes haul back & forth to their events when ever they charter a bus, and they are awesome too watch! They and I consider ourselves close friends and if I've learned anything at all it's that most of them have better attitudes than us so-called "normal" people. I encourage any of you who can to get to know these folks in your community and, if you can, attend some of the Special Olympic Games; you'll be amazed!:cool:

might be 2012 , by bets on more of a 2030 time. nuclear war would suck , and iv alredy got that damned bird flue so i hope im immune now. ill prepain for the 2012 thing but i wont become obsessed with it, ill be at a remote cabin stocked up with supplies , generators (thinking solar or wind aswell) , ammunition , and fuel. if it isnt the end of the world ill still be able to make a good vacation out of it.
Yeah that is real offensive, my Nephew is a special needs child and so dear to me, if that was said in my presence I probably say something to you about it, if you thought that was funny or a joke well then I'd give a special needed azz whopping.

Everybody that is either prejudiced, ignorant (I do not mean stupid, there is a difference), should live a few years with a handicap... like me.. 20 years now.. and you think it is pleasant to have to ask people to repeat themselves most of the time? Oh yeah, I have hearing aids... disabled vet.. but hearing aids don't pick up everything... and you still have to ask for repetiition. So handicapped, special needs is the same to varying degrees obviously. The world is full of insensitive people.. I have grown used to that.. and their derogatory nicknames and whispers..
I have said elsewhere that I am a loner.. a hearing loss makes a person a loner btw. The same goes for special needs people if they let it happen. don't ever shut out a handicapped person.. it hurts. Thanks for reading the rant..
I think that 2012 is the end of the mayan calendar. I listen to Coast to Coast AM at night and they sometimes talk about that. I have heard everything from the Rapture of Christians to Armagedden to space aliens visiting us on the White House lawn happening on that date.Quote:

Hey Ridge - On your hearing loss. I have the same problem. Too many loud 8 tracks (what?), too much noise at work without ear protection, to much...who knows. But I can't hear in the same range as a woman's voice (hey, I don't make this stuff up, I just accept the gift). Anyway, I can't hear a smoke alarm so I thought I would post this for anyone else who might have a similar problem. It's called the Signal One Vocal Smoke Alarm and it was designed to wake up children faster than conventional smoke alarms (it does that by the way). It also is the only smoke alarm I can hear. I've changed all my smoke alarms in the house to the Signal One alarm. It has both the conventional tone and a voice alarm.

Smok - I was just responding to your last sentence in post 67. I apologize if I come across loud. I don't mean to or try to force anyone to think the way I do. I do try to understand why people think the way they do and try to understand why folks think the world is going to come to an end for one reason or another.
I do admit to some consternation when folks say something like the "government". To me, that's a cheap and easy way to blame someone else. I'd be much more impressed if they told me who in the government and why. For example, one might say, "I think the CIA wants to monitor everyone's phone conversations to determine if we are paying our taxes." At least I can understand what their beliefs are and their reasoning behind those beliefs.
If someone says the government monitors everyone's phone calls, it sort of spins it like some whacked conspiracy theorist.

That is excellent... I don't have a problem with smoke alarms though.. I hear them just fine. It is alarm clocks that I don't hear.. even the cell phone type. I wonder if that technology can be put into an alarm clock? That would be a really good market for that device. I know that the deaf community has alarm clocks that flash a light etc.. but you end up paying a small fortune for those. I may write to this company about their product. Thanks..Quote:
