I made a new firesteel up and started on the knife scales...The firesteel handle is a .410 shell cut down, I removed the primer and used a Carter Pin to make for a lanyard (Dad used to make us keychains this way) I used JB weld to hold the firesteel in. The knife scales are Maple...I stained them green as a test...Not sure if they'll stay green or not! I am really liking the firesteel handle!

All I had was .38 and .270 brass. I'd have rather used a plated brass rifle or pistol brass but this is what fit. I'd think a 44 or 45 pistol round would work really well! This will do for now!Quote:

That is a great idea on the firesteel handle, the green scales (if they stay green) after shaping will look good.

It is a flat grind! That's a .38 brass cutdown for a lanyard liner! I plan on keeping the handle rather large but it is'nt finished yet...
Curious about trying liners and filling the file work with colored epoxy...What do you think?

I like it! You've made a fine knife out of that old steel and I really like the casing! As far as liners, I use vulcanized fiber on nearly all of my carbon steel blades that are getting wood handles. I think it helps seal the metal better. I dont know if brass would offer the same protection but it would add a nice look! Well done CS!
Thanks Camp! I still haven't mailed your leafspring and some other goodies I have gotten together. I am stupid about mailing stuff, just never have and can't make the post office with my work schedule the way it has been. With all thats in the news you may find this hard to believe but production has doubled at the plant. I am hiring 2 inspectors tomorrow, have been short handed. Lots still going on with the divorce too! I'll get it to you though and a huge Thankyou this has really helped me keep my piece of mind during a tough time! There is light at the end of the tunnel though. I'll have one less horse by the end of the month (hers). LOL, I wanna do the brass liners but past experience tells me it is a bugger to cut...right?Quote:

Lol, I gave the sheath to my Mora...better home. I still have a ways to go on this one...I decided not to temper...took an edge good..I may heat the back of the blade with a torch...but anyhow I am loving this knife...just glued the scales on...

I kept the handle wide and comfy...still plan to shape it some more.

I just filled the filework between the scales with homemade Epoxy. I used Gorilla Epoxy mixed with Epoxy powder coating to color. I'll finish shaping the handle when cured and use gunblue to bring the filework out in black.

Update...the epoxy dried and I did some handle shaping...My hobby is paying off...I am getting ready to trade a 19" Wetterlings for one similar to this. Still isn't finished.........

she's looking good, i really like the hand finish, just never been much of a fan of a high polish.
