I think "expert" is often used unofficially among regular people as a shorthand referring to "someone who knows more than we do" on a subject that requires a more extensive knowledge and experience than can be just picked up here and there.
We can't possibly know or experience everything no matter how important it is. If we don't trust others who have proven themselves in their particular field, we're really limiting ourselves. I think the responsibility comes in when sorting out what we've learned from the experts and applying it to what's right for us. That's one thing the experts can't tell us.

Don't think I ever met an expert on anything. I have known people more knowledgeable about a subject. Expert is relative to where you place yourself and your own knowledge. Modesty prevents me from rating myself but like walking into a bar and saying I can whip anyone in the house, always someone tougher and smarter.
