I was raised to be in the outdoors as much as possible. From a very young age, it was nothing to jump on my horse (or just grab my pack) and disappear into the woods for the weekend. Summers were spent camping, fishing, and hunting (sometimes for weeks at a time). My Grandparents were from the Depression Era, and transferred much of that raising and frugality on to me (although, I am still relearning some of those lessons the hard way. Just the hardheadedness of youth). I volunteered for SAR for a few years, it made me appreciate what how bad being unprepared could be. Being in the Air Force and traveling so much reinforced some of my skills, while making others lapse. I am now doing my best to practice up on some of those lapsed skills, while still keeping many of the others current. I now make much more time for hunting and fishing than I did while I was in. Not only do I have more time, moving back home has gained me much more access to the outdoors (on my terms) than when I was in.

My skills were honed camping, hunting, fishing, and working. I did a small stint with the Royal Ambassadors for Christ (Baptist Boyscouts) and also Cub Scouts. The real driver for me to want to know more about survival and Preparedness comes from 9/11, the birth of my daughter, and November 2008 when I realized more and more the S@#$ was kinda sliding too close to the fan!

Well, when I was a new born, the Pharoah was killing all the first born male children in our families so my Mom put me in this basket and set me floating down the river...no wait, that was Charlton Heston...oh yeah, I grew up with the wilds of northern Manitoba for a back yard and kind of took a liking to it at an early age, that's it!

What people call survival was a way of life for me. Always hunted, fished, picked greens etc and I was taught by Grandpa, born in 1895 in KY and my Great Grandmother, born in 1870 in KY and learned from all relatives the "old ways". Taught to shoot so early I can't remember, and learned from WWI & WWII vets how to stay in one piece when it got a little tough. I can remember when we got electricity, a well, bathroom & telephone when I was around 17 so I learn still and hope to never stop learning.
