Congratulations on having a healthy son! Now here's a bit of insight: Remember you're feelings on this right now! Lock them in as this is the peak of having children. They can become both a blessing & a curse! As they grow older & become more self-reliant, they find that they need you less & less; they know more than you, they rebel, then they realize what you mean to them & finally appreciate everything about you! Well he is still in the NICU and will probably spend a week there. He appears healthy, eats, is pink, is breathing fine now, but his labs keep coming back showing signs of possible infection (CRP of 3, where 1 is normal, elevated white blood cell counts). They did a spinal tap today to rule out meningitis. Every time we see him one more tube is off because he doesn't need it anymore, but then they tell us the labs are worse. So it feels like one step forward one step back.
This has to be agonizing for you Chris,I know you thought by now you would be holding him in your arms.It will work out,sounds like it is a little at a time,not fast enough for you I am sure.

Heck, I had to bring my daughter back for a three day long tune up when she was less than 24 hours old. Maybe they've finally smartened up on the length of hospital stays in the last 22 years.

He is eating really good, is off IV fluids, breastfed for the first time (really just latched, he didn't get much).

Labs have come back better, signs of infection are dissipating. He'll still stay long enough to finish the 7 day course of antibiotics, but should be fine.
Mom is exhausted, she tried to get up for every 3 hour feed, which lasts over an hour each (because at the NICU they mandate feeds every 3 hours, even if you half to wake the baby up, so it is basically force feeding, and it takes awhile). I'm forcing her to take a break today and just let us do some bottle feeding.

That's great news! The every three hour feedings - the rules even apply to 3 day olds. :sneaky2:
3 year olds? I'm on 3 hour feedings and I'm older than that!
