Good point about the maps. I've got the Lowrance gps w/ topo chip and it also has roads. It's a nice set-up and I've used it to navigate around rush hour traffic problems.

For bugging out, I agree on the severity to cause a bug out. How 'bout this, would you burn everything down before you leave? I think I would. However, it would depend on what caused the bug out. Too much info remains.

I think the only thing that would make me bug out would be a massive firestorm (be it nuclear or and exceptional natural event) or foreign invasion. In that case, I'm in the process of setting up a couple caches. My main point of my caches is just to avoid having all my eggs in one basket. While I hope my home will always be my home, one careless candle or one greasy trout and it could burn to the ground.

Since I'm relatively new to the forum, I haven't had a chance to check out how much caching has been written about. Any good threads on the subject or is it fresh fodder? My idea is to make a couple resupply caches that contain primarily food, but also other consumable items like batteries, candles, cartridges, socks, water treatment, etc. I'd also like a start-over cache, ideally on vacation property far away from home (southern Colorado is currenly on my radar). A start-over cache is everything you'd need for tools and kit to get back on your feet if you lost everything.

As for burning what I leave behind, no, I can't imagine I'd ever do that unless their was a foreign invasion. If my neighbors can't leave, I'd like to give them every advantage possible to have a fighting chance to survive. I've gone well beyond what I see as prudent food storage for myself and my family just so I can do what I can to help out my community. I've also put up four years of seeds to help start and sustain a community garden over the next few seasons.

I don't know if it's where I live, who I am, or what I see in the future, but I see every dime invested into your neighbors getting returned ten fold over the coming years. That's true whether we see hell on earth or the return of prosperity tomorrow. That's my real outlook for urban survival. If all my neighbors are growing their own food and have their own basic needs taken care of, it'll be pretty damn tough for an outsider to come in and take from my land.

Way back in the Dark Ages a group of nuts called themselves Weathermen were gonna close DC down traffic wise. Back then most cars didn't have inside hood releases, just open from the outside. I got caught at K St. in DC and a couple of freaks attempted to open my hood and pull the coil wire out. I got a little indignant, got out and convinced them it wasn't nice, got back in and drove down 14th St. on the sidewalk, bumped a few people but my old car could take it. Got to Constitution Ave and had 2 LEOs on the corner watching. The nuts had locked arms and were blocking the street. I told a cop I was going to VA and he asked how. I told him thru the mob and he said have at it, and I did. Guess my point is to survive sometimes you play offense. I might have waited to react and got hurt so to get where it's safe do what you need and don't back down. I don't heal as quick now and hurt a little longer but I still have the same attitude.

It cured me of ever wanting to live in a town. Back then that town only had a population of about 6000. In 2001 I went back there after I retired to visit some family. The population had grown to over 60,000.:eek:
