I listen to a lot of "Talk Radio" while I'm driving between stops. Today I heard the speach that FDR gave on June 6th. I guy called into the station and told the story of how on that day, in his second grade class, his teacher gathered all of the kids to tell them what was going on. Had to pull over to the side of the road while listening to that story.
I am always taken aback by some of the bizarre things that occur during war time. Things so outlandish that it almost defies belief if it weren't documented in After Action Reports. A couple of examples.
1. After my father's unit landed in Normandy their very first casualty was a cook. A cook! This poor guy is probably thinking what a deal I got. I'm not in a line unit so I might just make it through this thing. A sniper gets him on the first day.
2. After pitching tents a group of five guys bed down for the night in an area that had seen intense shelling. Late that night a tree falls on the tent. Kills one and severely injures three others. These guys, I'm sure, are keeping their heads down and doing everything they can to not be a target and then get taken out by a tree. What are the odds?
USMC PFC Jack Lucas, youngest Medal of Honor winner passed away last week from cancer.
He was awarded the Medal of Honor from actions on Iwo Jima.
A True Hero.
The Pacific was some of the hardest fighting in the war. I had a great uncle that fought at Iwo Jima.Quote:

My mother's brother (baby brother) was only 19 and on a ship in the Pacific during WWll. The ship was bombed; all on board lost. Don't think Mom ever really got over losing him. She spoke of him often. (I never knew him. I wasn't born then.) There is a hospital somewhere in the Pacific with a unit named after the ship and its crew.

I have actually been doing a report on this for school, and have read several sources and averaged them out. These are the statistics for all the fighting that took place in Finland during WWII. Germany did enter Finland during WWII, but quickly pushed into Russian territory so it shouldn't change the numbers that much.Quote:

But that only took place for one winter, then the Germans came in so it is considered different (even though it was mainly Finn/Soviet still. Wikipedia actually had pretty good estimates (they were in the mid-range from what I saw on other sites) so I used those.

It's on the history channel quite a bit, or at least used to. I bet they showed it in commemoration to all the troops that died or something.
I am not sure if the history channel is the same in the US as here, but here it is on tonight at 6....
