You are correct hunter I have never hit a "city boy" with my rifle's butt. I have however used it to kill a few wounded animals because I'm too cheap to waste ammo when not necessary. Steady pressure on the windpipe works just fine, with foot on the shoulder, especially if there is little water to clean your knife an I hate arterial spray.
That's why you gotta find that sweet spot! You don't cut off the whole arm just like half of it.Quote:

But it my luck that it always cold when I'm working and when I have the weekend off it warms up too much to be a "winter" trip. Only thing I can't handle in a cold trip is rain which has prevented me once already this winter.

We set a new record for the lowest high today. 3F and wind chills in the double digits below zero. It's so cold around here I saw a woman in Walmart wearing two pairs of pajamas. parump bump!

I went to basic at Ft. Benning with a guy from Alaska, and he shivered and said that Alaska was warm compared to a southern 25 with a little wind. He said that was the first winter he ever went through without snow but would welcome a blizzard than what we went through. I have been to Wisconsin in Janurary and while it was cold and I became accustomed when I returned home it seemed I was more cold. Just like when I was in Iraq and it was 115+ I thought it was hot till I got back to the southern US and about died from heat. 95 in MS feels like the hottest day in Iraq.Quote:

I've slept on the ground far south and far north and when it's cold it's cold and when it's hot it's hot. It's nice to know what to expect and to have decent gear. I've slept in -22 pretty easily and got pretty cold at 35 because I only had a blanket. If you're ready it's no problem and if you aren't you're screwed.
Spent the first two years of my life about 25 miles east of Phoenix Arizona, next three years on the island of Newfoundland off the east coast of Canada, next three years in central Louisiana, next three years back up in Newfoundland (Air Force brat.) I enjoyed the variety and spent as much time outdoors as I could get away with.
Decades later I returned to Phoenix for a few years and enjoyed their weather. Most weather acclimation takes place in the first week with small increases in the following week or two.
It's like that here too. Very miserably muggy heat. Just two years ago we had it reach 114 on top of that. But this last summer, just like this winter for the most part, was relatively mild.Quote:

When I was 18 years old at university in Texas I realized the need to acclimate to the cold and that I was a whimpy tropical animal (I had recently moved from living many years in the Amazon region). I was watching a sports game standing on aluminum bleachers and it was only about +28F. I was wearing a heavy parka with hood and beside me was a friend from Alaska wearing only blue jeans, shoes, and a short sleeve T-shirt. He was fine, but I was shivering. So I quickly realized I needed to adjust to my new environment, which was nothing like Alaska or Canada, those places would have left me totally immobile at the time, possibly dead. Funny thing is I have been camping with people who complained about the cold and just sat there. Well!!! get up and move around "for the love of Pete". Common Sense!
Really? Short sleeved shirt at 28 huh. Tough cat.
I still think a lot of it is personnel metabolism.......rather than location.
But that is just an opinion and personnel acquaintances over the years.
When it's been -45 for a while, 45 above does feel warm. I remember my first summer here, having moved from southern Oklahoma. I didn't wear shorts or a tank top all summer long as it was too cold! It did take a couple of years to adjust but now, 80 feels super hot!
