I don't want snakes, water, or anything in the phyla "Arthropda" or "Mollusca" to get on me in my sleep. Tents, man....tents.
With the family, yes. By myself or with trekking friends, no.
MSR trekker tent for backpacking and kodiak canvas 10X14 for car camping and 26' camper with all the lux of home when wife and kids come with.
I can remember a better part of a year where all I used was a poncho and liner while out on partol. Campiing isn't much different. If it's going to rain a tent, if not why bother. In summer, still a poncho and liner, if winter, I'll use my goose down sleeping bag.
I wrongly checked no...during hunting season I spend about 5 weeks in a canvas wall tent, sleeping on a cot, and keeping the wood burning stove stoked up! Nice!
The rest of the time I just use a bivy sack. I think an Outdoor Research bivy bag and a Wiggys sleeping bag is the ultimate sleep system. I sleep comfortably in rain, snow, sub zero, and buggy conditions with this combo. I have 2 Wiggys bags a lighterweight 3 season bag, and a 60 below zero Antactica bag. i regularly sleep under the stars in that bag on a Paco pad on the bed of my dog sled well below zero, and sleep soundly. If there is a chance of snow showers, i set up the OR bivy and sleep tight and dry. If your not familar with OR Bivy shelters and Wiggy's products- drop what your doing and look them up online. In my opinion there are no finer sleep systems.
I always pitch the tent, but alot of times I fall sleep by the fire in my chair.
You backpack with a chair?
Hey hon, can you help with this Lazy Boy Recliner? That's it. Right up here on my back.
A man's gotta have his standards. Now packing in that fridge for the cold beer........gotta be a bit younger for that.
Hang......on. Wheeeeew. Had to put the chair down. Man, that sucker gets heavy. I stuffed the beer down in the cushions to keep it cool. You'd have to be a Nancy boy to pack in a refrigerator. We're talkin' wilderness here, Crash!!
*makes note to self.....look up nancy boy I think I should be offended*
I use a tent. I always get really bad rain storms at night when I camp.
I've gotten back into camping in the last three years. Mostly on roadtrips and meets with other Dual Sport motorcyclists. I sometimes motor out into the local National Forest here - it's about five miles down the road from me!
If I'm staying in one campground for a few days, I take my 7X7 dome tent - for one old dawg, it's spacious! I can keep all my gear inside clean and dry. I'll use a twin-size air matress too - fifty year old bones don't do bare ground that well any more! :D
If alone and doing a one-nighter, I use my little 2.5lb BivyTent, from Sportsman's Guide. For a cheap tent, it's proven quite good! Been through some rain storms and stayed dry. I use a small air matress with it, though I just got a self-inflator. Need to test it before taking it very far.
My riding buddies call the BivyTent my "Body bag with a view"! Hehehe.
I carry a folding campchair too - great for a restfull evening by the fire. You'd be shocked how much a KLR650 can carry, when properly modded! And I can get into spots a 4X4 truck can't make!
You're right. I can't believe. Pictures man. Pictures. We want pictures.
I havnt used a tent sinc I was a kid. I dont like them and I dont like to carry them. Id rather make a shelter then carry a tent though usually I just sleep under the stars.
A couple days ago I went camping with Terzah (shes a cousin of mine) and we just slept in a cave. It was about 8 to 9 feet deep but not high enough to stand in. We made a fire in there and all we had other then that for warmth was a blanket. It was about 50 to 55 outside but very warm in the cave. I pland it on a night that it would storm cause I love thunderstormes and it was awsome sitting in that cozy cave with that warm crackling fire watching the lightning outside and listening to the thunder, rain and peeper frogs singing. We brought apples to roast and I took my native flute with me, that was the best night outside I had in a couple years :D.
Sounds great, Owl Girl. I love thunderstorms, too. I'll bet the sound of the native flute inside that cave was awesome.
I agree owl-girl,sounds like you had an awesome time!
Yea I loved it and waking up to the sound of owls was really cool to. We hiked up to it in the rain and dark but even that wasnt unpleasant. Its half way up a bluff so the veiw was great seeing the valleys bluffs from up there.
The views from those bluffs around here are pretty sweet. Heres one from the same bluff the cave that we camped in is on. I camp up there a lot
