Again, I can only comment on what occurs locally. I don't have any problem with the public schools. Sure, I'd like to see them improve but that's true of any school public or private. And I don't know what Indiana does relative to lottery dollars/eduction dollars. I've never looked into it. Crash might be right.

Wouldn't it be enough to provide for the three R's in education? Why all the sporting facilities, uniforms, instruments, trips, sensitivity training, ...etc? It's not just the school system that is wasting our money. Government allotments. To get the same or more allotment for the next year you better not have a surplus.

Anyway, I think with the cost of fuel and therefore everything else going higher we will be tightening our belts. Somethings will need to be reevaluated on an as needed basis. Look at the some of the two class society countries. I bet you will not find many new schools, hospitals, libraries,...

I sure do agree with you on allotments. Business operates the same way and in my opinion it trains spenders. During fourth quarter every year I would always receive the same memo requesting my department to spend as much of the remaining dollars as possible. Otherwise, just as you said, next year's allocation would be less. I never had a department that required the level of funding they had received and I wasn't a prude about spending money. I purchased new servers and desktops, laptops for my employees, upgraded their cubicles/offices, earmarked funds for celebrations and anniversaries and STILL had money left over. In one department I gave my boss back $250K each quarter because we were that far under budget. It's crazy.

quite the conundrum
Yeah I just wanted to use the word conundrum, but
a) you're more than welcome excalibur, the sad part of the story was eventually they got their money, they always do. I just wanted $800 worth of at least fun and games out of them
b) How can we discuss things like taxes and economics (I know I'm sounding like a broken record here, but certain pols are going to follow specific economic policies!!) without getting political??
c) I say we hold a protest and occupy the students centre (whoa, that was 40 years ago, hey...a mushroom, be right back)

I've got to leave for the slave ship. I'll take the Ben Hur motto with me to "row well and live".
