I've read that the bridge was previously struck by a truck before this whole debacle. It will be interesting to see how this washes out especially if it was previously hit. Since the driver was hauling an oversize load he had to receive permits from the state, which would indicate the route he could take. So the state would have some complicity if the load was known to be 15' 9" as the news is saying. The lowest point on the bridge was 14' 6" but not posted on the bridge. Someone must have got their gazintas mixed up when issuing the permit.

I haven't read any of their data, but their conclusions are thought provoking. The SF/Oakland Bay Bridge has not bee in a suitable state of repair in my lifetime. The new eastern span was designed to last 150 years with proper maintenance (a level of maintenance which it has not historically received with no reason I know to expect that to change).
