I grew up on Long Island. The only person I knew growing up that had a gun was my cousin, but he was a cop. A lot of my friends are nervous of guns to the point that when I was asking a friend if he wanted to go to NH, and I mentioned taking my shotgun, he suggested I don't. Not because of rules or regulations, but cause he didn't want to be around it. It's sad.
Benesse, If I may ask what were the demographics of your youth? And time frame?

I had a rem, 870 on the wall in my room at my parents at 9 yrs. of age and still have it. My brother I shared the room with was 8 and he had one too. Not one single incident has ever occured with those guns. Yes we both had Dad'd handloads in the closet.
I'm from the class of 2003 and there were no firearms allowed on school grounds. Luckily, the farmer accross the street was kind enough to gravel a few acres so those of us who had guns could park over there. The outside school officer even kept an eye on our cars/trucks too, even though he wasn't required to.
I don't remember what the rules were. But, guys had guns in there trucks. We had a lot next to school where you could park you truck and it was your business what was in there. We definitely carried knives on campus. Though I don't remember if there was a rule against it or not.
We could smoke on the sidewalk. But, if stepped on school property you could get in trouble. Usually being told to step off the property.
A side note: One of the kids I played football with grabbed his .22 rifle from his truck and killed a boy for hitting on his girl. He got 3 years and did 1 year for that. Doesn't seem right...
We had a similar deal with a shotgun. I don't remember what gauge. The kid lived and the shooter went to jail but I don't remember for how long. The shooter stuck that thing in the drivers window and pulled the trigger. The only reason he lived was the guy in the passenger seat was a medic back from Nam and the driver's dad was the hospital administrator. Seems like he was in the hospital for months but it's been a long time ago.
EDIT: Jeepers! I just googled the shooters name and he was arrested again this year for illegal trade of firearms. He was arrested, "on numerous federal charges, including the illegal sale of a firearm." The chief said, "XXX has been a perennial criminal in (my hometown) when he is not in the custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections."
Not a surprising outcome.

My junior year, a boy who was suspended showed up with a loaded shot gun and went into the cafeteria. The cops were called, and I believe a teacher convinced him to put the gun down. He was arrested (a senior, but not sure if he was 18). He did some time for mental therapy and then was out in time to go to college in the fall... They recreated the scenario for an episode of "Cops".

Growing up in sight of NYC we didn't have any firearms. We did have a crossbow, long bow, and pellet guns. Heck, every saturday the grammer school across the street opened up the gym for archer and later either basketball or dodgeball. Now summers in the Catskills many of the uncles had guns and we got to shoot them. The first centerfire firearm I shot was a Thompson sub-machinegun.
I agree with Winter although one needs to be vigilant when the kids friends come over for a visit. Luckily in our case the friends are familiar with firearms.
