For me, not so much. The type of boats I was on didn't pull into foreign ports very often. Every now and then, but not often.

on a more serious note is anyone able to answer any of my questions:mad:;):p
Watch out about the travel, I've known people who never left the states.
I will answer these questions based on my military exp. 81-89 in the USMC, 82-84 1st Recon Bn.
1. do they use any weapons they want or do they have standard guns
Standard, if you want fancy you'll have to go Army as they get all the good stuff.
2. what do they pack in their bags
Least amount as possible. Many times we had only what we could fit in an arspack.
3. what is their fitness training daily
Bootcamp. FMF, pt every day. Min. 3 mile runs, push ups, sit ups, bodybuilders, hello darlings, etc., Weekly we would have extended runs of 8 miles and up. You take to long, you miss chow. I don't miss chow. Depending on schedules, beach assaults, swims of various kinds. Then there is the additional training with the Army and Navy, if you work hard enough.
4. before a mission how knowledge are they on local plants and the terrain they are fighting on
Mountain warfare, we learned how to kill in that environment. Jungle warfare, we learned how to kill in that environment. Desert warfare, we learned how to kill in that environment. You eat what you bring, stay away from toads, and have plenty of iodine tablets.
5. Do they pack their own survival kit
Yes, many of us during the mountain warfare had our own privatetly made up survival kits. These included fire starting, mirrors, snare wire, extra rounds, extra rounds, poncho and liner, canteen and canteen cup etc. This did come in handy as many an afternoon meal was mixed with wild onions, fruit, berries, snared rabbits, and snakes. Crats and MRE's got old after the first couple days. Sure do miss those pound cakes and canned eggs.
Alot has changed since I was in. Back then, the Army had all the modern equipment. The Navy had the neat guns, especially the seals with that weird 60, it looked bulky and heavy, but it sure was neat.
thanks alot FVR
i took the asfab test for the marines when i was 11 i saw a marine at a booth in his dress blues and thought wow thats what i wanted to be, i lived my life accordingly, i did not have a good home enviroment and was an angry young man didn't pay attention in school got in lots of fights and suspended alot didn't matter cuz i was going in the marines(fortunatley i am a very intelligent person so that got me thru what i didn't learn in school) so bty grade 11 i drop out much to everones relief even the cops didn't want to deal with me cuz i could scrap very well, but now the corps won't take me into recon cuz i dropped out so i talk to the navy nope no seals for a dropout then i talk to the airfarce pararescue no again so then i talk to the army what about the green berets i ask no again so as i turn to walk out of the office the recruiter says"but we do have the rangers" what the haeck is a ranger i asked him? so he sits me down and watches this video i'm like ok what ever. got it in my contract though...very important.
so i'm at basic in harmony church(home of the true infantry) and we hit the rack at 2200 and i can hear these poor bastards down the road screaming and yelling and getting gigged pretty hard then at 0300 hear the same crap again. my mates are just laughing at us who are going to rip
so about 3 weeks to graduation i'm standing in line at the barber shop and this big muther shows up on a beautiful harley says to the line "who's going ranger? a couple of us raise our hands he tells us to shave our heads so we did, while everone else got the high and tight we shaved and by the time ftx was over and graduation came around they wern't regulation and had to shave while we was hahahahahahahahahahahahhahahhahahahha.
oh yeah point of this story get it in writing most special forces you have to be invited to tyr out once you get to your duty station chances of your co letting you go try out are small.
thanks for the story eagle
1. do they use any weapons they want or do they have standard guns
There are various weapons for various missions; M16-A2, M203 attachment, M249 Saw, M60, M4 (bullpup M16 for MOUT), etc etc. Some of these, like the 249 and the 60 have been updated to newer models since I got out in 02. Weapons are issued per squad, usually, so you'll usually have several M4's or M16's, one or two of which, usually the team leads and squad leaders, will have 203's attached, and then one SAW per squad (hence the name squad automatic weapon). You also typically get one 60-gunner and assistant per platton. (Assistance carries extra ammo and spare barrel. You do NOT want to melt that damn barrel)
2. what do they pack in their bags
Whatever their CO tells them to in the mission manifest. Packing lists are dictated by mission and terrain, as well as a few other things.
3. what is their fitness training daily
Running. running. running. If you're talking basic training, more running. There are all kinds of other things... pushups, situps, running, shoulder exercises, running, ruck marches, running, boot runs, oh yeah, did I mention they do some running, too?
4. before a mission how knowledge are they on local plants and the terrain they are fighting on
Wasn't a ranger, so I can't answer on the specifics. Go talk to a US Army recruiter. Ask him about survival training for the USAR. He'll show you a video that may answer some questions, but ask him to put you in contact with a USAR organization who could probably answer more detailed questions for you so you know if it's something you want to do. Recruiters lie horribly to get you in, so be adamant about the USAR number. If he won't, try another one. I do know they get survival training for various terrains, but I don't think they do much with wild edibles as typically it's not an extended survival situation.
5. Do they pack their own survival kit
Yeah, it's called a ruck, MOLLE pack, r 3-day assault. It's also dictated by the packing list included with the manifest.
Finally, if I were you, and I was going into the military as a combat MOS, I'd choose Combat Engineer. You get the same infantry training and light unit tactics, but you specialize in explosives, demolitions, creating and breaching obstacles like tank ditches, mine fields, and dead falls. There is a specialization course called Sapper where you get quite a bit of the same training Rangers do, but you get more in how to make your own explosive munitions, as well as field expedient munitions. Unfortunately, the US Army decided that the sapper "tag", unlike the ranger tag, was not authorized for uniform display, so most guys sew it under the flap of the pocket. If you want the ranger tag for pride on the uniform, sapper is not for you. You can still go airborne or air-assault, and one or the other may be required depending on the engineer unit. The way engineers and sappers work is they attach a squad to a company of infantry, and you travel along somewhere in the middle of the formation. When the ground pounders encounter an obstacle, they call you up and give you your mission. Then it's bang time, baby. there's nothing in the world equal to putting a push-turn-pull on a 50lb satchel charge for the first time.
Unfortunately, there was a rumor that they were going to downsize the 12B (combat engineer) MOS, and try to incorporate it into 11B (infantry). Not sure if it ever happened, as I got out to do other things. As for spending all your time stateside, if you do go in, and you finish school and don't have to many issues on your police record, MAKE the recruiter give you Duty Station of Choice. If you can, and do, go engineer, pick Germany. You'll have the time of your life. Korea sucks, but I still had a blast.
thanks alot alpine very through with the infomation
Did someone say something about herding cats???

Make sure when ya sign the papers, you realize what you need to do in bootcamp to get your mos.
I was gauranteed combat eng., the little print that I did not read was that I had to get a 1st class swim. Well, I'm no rock, but I did not get a 1st class swim in bootcamp. There goes my gaurantee.
But hey, I'm the lucky one as I got sent to Recon. Darn. Funny thing, I spent more time in the water at Recon than I ever would have as a combat eng.
I was talking with a recruiter yesterday about re-enlisting, and he provided a nice little tidbit that has changed since I was in. First, 12B is now 21B Combat Engineer for the Army. Second, from http://usmilitary.about.com/od/army/a/sappertab.htm:
Aug 6 2004
A new Sapper tab for combat engineers is now authorized for wear by qualified Soldiers on their left shoulder.
Until this summer, only the Special Forces tab and the Ranger tab were authorized for wear above the unit patch on the left shoulder.
Army Chief of Staff Gen. Peter Schoomaker approved the Sapper tab June 28 for award and wear by engineer Soldiers who complete the Sapper Leader Course. The course is part of the U.S. Army Engineer School at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. This award is retroactive back to the graduates of the first SLC on June 14, 1985.
The tab will be worn below the Special Forces or Ranger tab, if a Soldier has either of those. Other details concerning the wear of the Sapper tab will be released through official G-1/Human Resources Command channels sometime in the next 90 days, officials said.
Sappers are combat engineers who advance with the front-line infantry, and they have fought in every war in American history.
For example, they played a vital role in securing Omaha Beach on D-Day, and that incident is faithfully re-created in Saving Private Ryan.
-----------snip-----------
You can follow the link to read the rest of the article, but the important part is that the US Army is now fully recognizing Sapper school, and it's even required by DOD to get E6 as a 21B.
Hooah!
WildGoth I have a book that covers all the U.S. Special Forces from SF to Rangers, Recon to Seals, and even Air Force Parajumpers and Forward Observers thier history and command structure, weapons, and more, if you want it PM me with your address and I'l send it to you.
Beo,
Alpine Sapper, good info but the Combat Engineer does not get the same training as a Ranger, it may be "like" Ranger training but its not the same training. Although now adays such as over in Iraq and other sandbox countries all the Combat Engineers, 11Bs, Rangers, Scouts 19-D, and most combat MOS's are doing the same thing such as in Urban warfare like building and home searchs, clearing the villages, and raodblock check points. I have friends there now in the Rangers and they do sweep missions (don't ask me) and SAR missions that others do not, but as far as regular Ranger School training it has remined the same as far as I know. In Ranger School you go over wild edibles but its not a specific subject as they are rapid deployment light infantyr unit. My friend is now patroling hostile areas in squads of six or eight and doing deep desert missions on suspeted enemy villages, the combat engineers do not do this. But a Combat Engineer is a specialized soldier and the training is very rigorous nowadays I am told. They (combat engineers) should never be overlooked and they are climbing the ladder fast at becoming a special operations identified unit like the Rangers and 10th Mountain Division. The Combat Engineer is a much needed soldier and I gained a tremendous amount of respect for them when I was Desert Shield/Storm. I have told my son (he asked about the military) that the Combat Engineers are a great specialized unit in that they do what some of the more conventional or well known special operation forces don't do.
And blowing things up is always cool.
