Hello and welcome. Does your Ural have a PTO for small farming implements? A friend had one and apparently in it's home country there was an agricultural version as well as military

Ah, the Ural as a farm implement. No, mine does not- nor do they make them with a PTO nowadays, if I'm not mistaken. But I would love to have a PTO, and that topic of discussion comes up often amongst the Ural owners.

After WWII, just like our Jeep, the Ural was picked up by farmers and used in the fields. Since it was a very simple machine, it worked well. Today, most Russians can't understand why an American from the land of Harley Davidson, would want such a low tech farm implement such as the Ural.

I guess we Americans are an odd lot...

After a quick internet search I found there is a shop not far from me that sells Ural's. I was surprised on the cost. I thought it would be more than that.

Welcome to the forum! I have wanted a URAL for several years- they are awesome. Isn't there also a Chinese version of it- Chang Jiang or something? Whats the difference between the two? Also are the parts from the Chinese, Russian and German versions interchangeable?

The Russians reverse-engineered the BMW R/75 so the parts are not interchangeable. Years later, the Russians upgraded their factory and sold the old stuff to the Chinese who made the Chiang Jiang with the old, outdated factory machinery. So the Ural parts are not interchangeable with the Chinese bikes either. The Chinese bike is very prone to breakage of the parts and won't go over 45mph, typically. That said, I know of some CJs that have been "well-sorted" and run fine. But they still don't go very fast at all. But they are cool looking...

The Germans stopped making sidecar bikes after WWII so what there were of them after the war was it. Nowadays most are long gone and the ones left are carefully maintained so as to not break anything, since replacement parts are rare and expensive. But since the Russians have never stopped manufacturing theirs, parts are plentiful and you can thrash these things off road without fear of parts availability.

And they're cheap. Parts too.

Today they come with electronic ignition, but are easily converted to a points system, or even a 'total loss' system. Therefore, as a vehicle for TEOTWAWKI purposes, it will survive the EMP from the blast and still run. And it's easily repaired with common hardware store items or even fabricated stuff. You'll still need gas though.

That said, if anyone near me decides to obtain one, let me know and we can go adventuring together. In two weeks, a bunch of us Ural owners are going on a search for the Jersey Devil in the Pine Barrens of NJ. All offroad, mostly trails and fire cuts that we've never been on before, real good chance of getting totally lost, someone is bound to get stuck, someone will probably break down or dump their rig in a cranberry bog, occasionally someone gets hurt- but it's all fun. Camping at Atsion, tall tales around the campfire, some camp food, Russian beer and vodka (don't tell the Rangers...), and more tall tales.

The Pine Barrens are not all that remote, generally speaking, but these are the kind of activities I engage in that being more knowledgeable about wilderness survival becomes important. Often I ride alone. I always keep in mind that "I can ride farther in one hour than I can walk in a day", so the possibility of spending the night, or even a couple of days, in the wilderness is always there.

Now to brush up my firemaking skills with two sticks...:)
