Hi Littlewing ;)
Welcome to the boards!
I grew up in Alberta after moving with my parents when I was about 5. Banff is a lovely area but they are very tough on 'camping' there. Lots of wardens and they take their park very seriously. Since it is classified as National park there are a lot more rules than we have out in Ontario (at least that i have seen so far in my 5 years living over here)
Incidentally, I did a very similar thing when I was 16 by hitchhiking out to Ontario from Calgary. It was a rush but I would be very worried about doing it today. Things were a lot different 25 years ago. If you can possibly help it I would recommend against riding with anyone but the truckers as they usually have no time to mess around. Of course I was a pretty cute 16 yr old girl - it may be different for a couple of guys.
Some good advice about the passport and also I don't know how easy it will be to get someone to take you across a border - maybe something to look into. Good Luck with your planning !

Hey littlewing, Just a couple of things:
If you're hitch-hiking, who in their right mind is going to pick up two guys carrying a rifle?
try hopping a freight car these days and you're going to bounce off, the rail lines are way careful about keeping them locked for the last 30 years or so
by all means, make the trip, but forget about guns until you're settled somewhere long term and forget about them in national parks too, dude. And the knife is a tool, a good tool a very important tool, but who the heck are you protecting yourself from with it? Seriously, you've got a travel partner, you're safe.
Keep us posted and if you're thumbing past my way, hell I'll probably throw some venison on the barbecue for ya.
